RAND SUPPORT RAND An electrical engineer by training, Paul Baran worked for Hughes Aircraft Company's systems group before joining RAND in 1959. While working at RAND on a scheme for U.S. telecommunications infrastructure to survive a "first strike," Baran conceived of the Internet and digital packet switching , the Internet's underlying data communications technology. His concepts are still employed today; just the terms are different. His seminal work first appeared in a series of RAND studies published between 1960 and 1962 and then finally in the tome "On Distributed Communications," published in 1964. Since the early 1970s as an entrepreneur and private investor, Baran has founded or co-founded several high-tech telecommunications firms. He is currently chairman and co-founder of Com21, Inc., a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of cable TV modems for high-speed, high-bandwidth Internet access. He is also a co-founder of the Institute for the Future. Baran holds several patents and has received numerous professional honors including an honorary doctorate from his alma mater Drexel University (BS '49). He has a master's degree in engineering from UCLA.

International Journal Of Education And Development Using ICT An open access ejournal that aims to strengthen links between research and practice in ICT in education and development in hitherto less developed parts of the world. http://ijedict.dec.uwi.edu/
Extractions: IJEDICT aims to strengthen links between research and practice in ICT in education and development in hitherto less developed parts of the world, e.g., developing countries (especially small states), and rural and remote regions of developed countries. The emphasis is on providing a space for researchers, practitioners and theoreticians to jointly explore ideas using an eclectic mix of research methods and disciplines. It brings together research, action research and case studies in order to assist in the transfer of best practice, the development of policy and the creation of theory. Thus, IJEDICT is of interest to a wide-ranging audience of researchers, policy-makers, practitioners, government officers and other professionals involved in education or development in communities throughout the world. IJEDICT comprises: a "research articles" section for academic, peer-reviewed articles; a "studies from the field" section for edited (but not peer reviewed) case studies; a "project sheets" section for brief dedscriptions of relevant project; a "notes from the field" section for working papers, and other commentaries on relevant topics; and, a "book/media review" section for book, software and other media reviews.

Stuttering Therapy Treatment And Research Through HCRI Stuttering Therapy and research Hollins Communications research Institute (HCRI) developed and conducts the Hollins Fluency System www.stuttering.org http://www.stuttering.org/
Extractions: Cutting edge research conducted by the staff of the Hollins Communications Research Institute has demonstrated the valuable role of scientific analysis in the creation of an objective, reliable, and effective 12-day treatment for stuttering . At HCRI, stuttering therapy represents a specific combination of advanced behavioral and computer technologies that enhance the learning and retention of fluent speech. 98% of HCRI program graduates say they would recommend this advanced stuttering therapy program to others who stutter. For many HCRI graduates, stuttering therapy is a one-time experience as fluency has replaced stuttering and continued therapy is not necessary. For persons who wish to have post-therapy support, HCRI offers a variety of services, including FluencyNet home or office fluency support system that is available to alumni on a 24 / 7 basis.
NYSERNet:Main: All the while NYSERNet deployed ever faster research networks, becoming the Our RFP revealed that only a custom build to this community could make such http://www.nysernet.org/
Extractions: Timothy Lance, President and Chairman Two words summarize NYSERNet, one of the Internets enduring partnerships: bold, and first. In 1985, realizing that New Yorks research institutions needed to reach NSFNet, then under development, their representatives decided to form a new corporation, and proposed building a statewide network to do so. As Dr. Steve Wolff, then head of the NSFNet program, wrote years later, this proposal caused a major paradigm shift at NSF. Instead of funding institutional connections to supercomputer centers, the NSF shifted to funding connections of cohesive regional networks. ... NSFNET is not a network. It is an internetwork- i.e., a network of networks, which are organizationally and technically autonomous but which interoperate with one another." The resulting NYSERNet backbone marked the Internet protocols first deployment on a statewide basis, also its first use outside of Federal government control. NYSERNet co-developed SNMP, a network management protocol now globally employed, created the first 24 by 7 network operation center, the first Internet training center, and, when it spun off PSI, the first commercial ISP. For several years NYSERNet managed the Defense Departments DARPANET test bed. All the while NYSERNet deployed ever faster research networks, becoming the first regional to implement such emerging tools as native IPv6 and multicast. Over the past three years NYSERNet has accomplished yet another fundamental transition this time, to light. To end its dependence on carrier provided circuits, NYSERNet determined to deploy or acquire fiber optic cable, focusing first on New York Citys unparalleled density of research, educational, medical, and cultural institutions.

Extractions: The Physiological Ecology Section is one of the largest sections in the Ecological Society of America. Its primary purpose is to promote research, teaching, and communication in physiological ecology of both animals and plants. The section sponsors symposia at the annual ESA meetings, holds meetings of its members, and facilitates communication through mailings and the electronic newsgroup bionet.ecology.physiology. Contributing to career development of new people in the field is also a goal. The section is establishing links with physiological ecologists of the British Ecological Society and the Gesellschaft für Ökologie (the ecological society of German speaking countries).
