The agreement that there would be an Italian pride march and no mention of Columbus and consequently no protest, broke down. Glen believes in freedom of speech but doesn't believe the city of Denver should sponsor this parade. In Denver, groups can have parades without a permit if they walk on the sidewalk. The American Indian movement believes that the actual granting of a permit to have a parade (which sets aside a certain part of Denver, disrupts transit, etc.,) isn't a right but a privilege. Is it appropriate for the city of Denver to grant this privilege to this group, considering American Indians' objections to Columbus? Mike then went on to introduce the topic of the panel. He has an end-of- semester weekend retreat for two of his graduate school classes. For me, Columbus meant a three-day weekend. But the unorthodox text I'd assigned in an introductory U.S. history course some years ago, Howard Zinn's " A People's History of the United States " since made famous by Matt Damon in the movie "Good Will Hunting" starts with Columbus, so I gave it a whirl. Here's how Zinn begins: "Arawak men and women, naked, tawny, and full of wonder, emerged from their villages onto the island's beaches and swam out to get a closer look at the strange big boat." Aside from its literary quality, the hint of Eden, and guesswork about the natives' state of mind, the passage asks us to look at the "discovery" upside-down: from the point of view of the people being "discovered." Zinn tells the now familiar story of violence and mayhem and greed, how Columbus seized land and prisoners, embarked on a futile, relentless search for gold, finally, when that failed, took slaves.

How you commemorate the event, depends on whether you identify yourself as a descendent of the perplexed and generous natives who aided him, or as an inheritor of the barbarous hoards that followed in his wake. In Mexico, Columbus Day is a school holiday. While banks, government offices and businesses are open as usual, students and teachers use the opportunity to express their continuing opposition to a government which they believe denies them money for supplies and salaries, intellectual freedom, and in the case of one hundred thousand students recently denied admission to the Autonomous University of Mexico a place at the academic table. The "exclusados" (excluded ones) claim that they failed the entrance exam because unlike their more affluent fellows they could not afford to buy the answers. The University denies that any such black market exists.

Should or should not European Americans be teaching courses on Native American religions? 2. If we should not, why not, and what would be the results of our deferral? 3. If we should, how best can we proceed? I am giving much thought these days to the question of cultural imperialism, especially in two of its forms, namely, religious and academic imperialism. While on leave, I have been asked by the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, to teach a very large, publicly visible introductory course on Native American religions. Even without David Carrasco, soon on his way to Princeton, this is an sizeable concentration of authorities, of various sorts, on indigenous cultures, politics, law, and religions. Ordinarily, I teach courses on indigenous religions at Wilfrid Laurier, a small Canadian university where I can do what I do in relative obscurity, that is, at considerable remove from indigenous populations of the American Southwest, where I do most of my field work, and at a considerable remove from high-profile scholars whose names are regularly associated with Native American studies.
