Extractions: Teaching Heart's Learning Centers Page Below you will find pictures of centers, various links about centers, and printable centers that you may use in your classroom! Update June 18, 2005 How I have used centers in my classroom... I have three leveled reading groups. I run reading groups from 9:30 - 10:50. On the board I write the students jobs (things they are doing when they are not at reading group). The jobs look like this. Also, I have to note that they work on the jobs in order. After reading group they usually have an independent activity to complete. They must do that before they start back on jobs. That is not on their job list but they know that it takes first priority! Jobs 1. Math Box Page 35 (I teach Everyday Math and they have Math Boxes with each lesson - you could just have them complete a math sheet related to what you are working on in math) 2. Daily Printing (I use Draw Write Now (see below for more information on these books) - we are on book 8 at the moment. I write the paragraph on the board. They copy it in their best writing and then draw an illustration to match.)
Columbus Day, Thanksgiving--Holiday Anti-Racism Resources columbus day, Thanksgiving Unbiassing Social Studies RETHINKING columbus TEACHING ABOUT THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF columbus S ARRIVAL IN AMERICA, http://www.kstrom.net/isk/books/adult/thanksgi.html
Extractions: In 1992, there was a great deal of hooraw and foofaw about the 500th anniversary of the start of the invasion of both continents of the western hemisphere, which has been crassly described as "discovery" ever since, by dominant society historians (and everyone except indigenous peoples and their survivors). During this Quincentennial period there was an outpouring of educational materials, mostly more of the same biassed and stereotyped history. This has now died down a bit. Columbus Day is not as big a school holiday as (in the U.S.) Thanksgiving. But the Quincentennial occasion also gave rise to some self-scrutiny, and some that was prompted by Native groups, activists, historians, and educators. From one of the best sources comes an explanation for teachers certainly in Native schools if any are doing conventional mainstream social studies, but primarily for educators of non-Indian students as to why (and how) to revise what they teach. This page will select from materials reviewed and present links-to reviews of books (and occasional AV materials) especially well-suited for incorporation into standard social studies, de-mystifying and de-mythologising what most U.S. children are still taught. It will also present relevant modern documents statements by Native groups or leaders. Below from one of the best sources is the philosophy of this page:

Extractions: Denver Post Staff Writer A group of educators is using a national model to create a Christopher Columbus curriculum that pulls Indians from the margins of history and looks critically at the idea of identity in historical events. Traditional lessons of Columbus reflect the identity of the Europeans on the ship with Columbus, said Stephanie Rossi, a Wheat Ridge High School history teacher. But there is also "the perspective from the shore," Rossi said. The Arawak and Taino Indians on what are present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic have a different story, she said. What hasn't been told, Rossi said, is how indigenous people were killed by Spaniards who traveled with Columbus or were enslaved, or how women were raped for payment.

Extractions: Sun Nov 14 11:50:53 CET 2004 Since starting with Python tutoring, I've already learned a lot. For example, I'm a new convert to this technique of programming around the Gregorian calendar (that's the familiar one, to us ISO-Latin types). It's a good mix of real world and abstraction, in that figuring the holidays is kinda messy (given the calendar is leap year and all that), yet coded solutions exist (most easily within the epoch I've not ventured outside it). For example, Columbus Day is the Monday nearest to October 12th. Here's my code for that: def getcolday(y): """ Get Columbus Day, return daynum Monday closest to Oct 12 """ i = j = 12 i -= 1 j += 1 closest = j else: closest = i return getdaynum(y, 10, closest)

Extractions: This volume can be used with Howard Zinn's classic text, A People's History of the United States, as well as with Zinn's collaboration with Anthony Arnove, Voices of a People's History of the United States, a collection of readings and documents that flesh out Zinn's original narrative. Olson-Raymer suggests discussion questions, essay topics, and other activities to help students engage with key themes in both books. Many of these can be used as-is with students, but they can also help teachers frame their U.S. history curriculum more intelligently. The Freedom: Shadows and Hallucinations in Occupied Iraq The title of this book is drawn from Parenti's translator in Iraq: "Ah, the freedom. Look, we have the gas-line freedom, the looting freedom, the killing freedom, the rape freedom, the hash-smoking freedom. I don't know what to do with all this freedom." Although this is not likely a book that could be used in full with students, there are sections that could be used in high school classes. For example, Chapter 8, on Abu Ghraib prison, is one of these sections, or parts of Chapter 5, "Meeting the Resistance." Definitely not G-rated fare, this is a book that can be excerpted to give students an alternative to the mostly uncritical with-our-troops reporting found in daily papers.

Since 1920 the day has been celebrated annually. The history of Columbus, first landing in the New World on October 12, will be retold in many social studies classes in October The following is a brief account of its history. On August 3, 1492 Columbus and 90 men set sail to find an easier route to Asia for the spice merchants. The expedition was sponsored by Queen Isabella of Spain, provided that Columbus would conquer some of the islands and mainland for Spain. On October 12 the ships landed on the island of Guanahani (in the Caribbean Islands) which Columbus immediately christened San Salvador and claimed it for Spain. When they landed on what is now Cuba they thought it was Japan!
