They thought that monsters or a trip over the edge of the earth waited for anybody who sailed outside the limits of known territory. People laughed at or jailed others who dared think that the world was in the shape of a globe. There were educated persons, however, who reasoned that the world must be round. An Italian named Christopher Columbus was bold enough to push this notion, and ask for money to explore the seas, and find what he thought would be the other hemisphere of the earth. Portugal, Italy and England refused to support such a venture. At that time, spice merchants were looking for an easier route to Asia. They traveled south past Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, and continued eastward. Christopher Columbus convinced Queen Isabella of Spain that it would be easier to sail directly west and find the rich treasures of India and Asia. A new route would be found, he said, and possible new lands for Spain. Columbus first asked Queen Isabella for help in 1486, but it was years before she agreed... provided that he conquer some of the islands and mainland for Spain. Columbus would also be given the title of "Admiral of All the Ocean Seas," and receive one-tenth of the riches that came from any of his discoveries.

To help students understand the length of time, cut out 69 ships. Number the ships from 1 to 69. Tape a ship on a bulletin board or across the blackboard every day. On the 69th day, have a celebration of some kind. Some other math activities that you can do with the students are: create Columbus word problems using the ships; have students determine how many days till the 69th day; write down the numbers that are odd or even; count by 2's, 5's, 10's; review place value. Writing : Read "The Log of Christopher Columbus-The First Voyage" by Steve Lowe or any other journal/log book on Christopher Columbus. Explain to students that they will make pretend they were on one of the ships and to keep a log of a day in their life on the ship. Students can choose the ship and their job on that ship. Extractions: The Harvest Festival is part of the larger Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, which just had a Topping Off Ceremony for its new pavilion, said David Carlucci, President and Executive Director of Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Construction is moving ahead steadily and we will open on July 4th weekend in 2006. Those who come to the Harvest Festival this summer and fall will learn about the new facility and how to obtain information about programs and tickets. Vendors are located under a tent across the road from the Woodstock monument site of the original 1969 Woodstock Festival. All booths are protected from the weather, with parking close to the vending area. Everyone is welcomed, but pets are not allowed. The event is sponsored by the Gerry Foundation.
