Extractions: CDG Home PICCC Web Site BOALSBURG, Pennsylvania To celebrate Christopher Columbus and all the cultures that have shaped America, historic Boalsburg will host an extraordinary weekend on October 9 to 11, 2004, with a festival, a ball and a religious service. This is because in Boalsburg descendants of Christopher Columbus and even the Admiral's desk of the famed explorer provide a unique living connection with Columbus, who first arrived in the New World on October 12, 1492, to begin the American experiment that continues today. Food, music and crafts of many cultures will be featured from Noon to 4pm on Saturday, October 9, in the festive Boalsburg village square beautifully decked out in the flags of many nations. Then at 7:30pm community members will gather for the Boal Mansion Ball with contra-dancing, champagne and fine food. Conveniently sandwiched between the Boalsburg events will be nearby Penn State's home football game against Purdue which starts at 4:30pm. "The weekend is about cultural harmony through cultural awareness," says Christopher Lee, a member of the Boal family and CEO of the Boal Mansion Museum. Lee quotes former Penn State President Bryce Jordan who when he spoke in Boalsburg said, "Diversity in America is not a threat. It is a resource."

Extractions: A Publication of the Intercultural Center HALLOWEEN Children growing up in the United States think of 31 October as the night to dress in costumes, put on masks, and go from door to door asking for "trick or treat." Parents of these children think of all the candy that will be eaten during the following days! However, there is much more to Halloween than these latter-day customs. Other countries have different Fall festivals to honor the deceased. The Festival of the Dead is one of the most important happenings in both Palermo and the rest of Sicily. The second of November is a festival day for the children as, according to tradition, they are led to believe that their dead relatives would return the night before and leave them traditional sweets and cakes. This is one way of keeping the memory of their dead relatives and loved ones alive. Considered by many to be the most important holiday of the year in Mexico, Los Dias de los Muertos (The Days of the Dead) begin the evening of 31 October and last through 1 November. A caution note to parents: If your children are going Trick-or-Treating on Halloween night, please go with them with a flashlight. Many shopping malls in the Kansas City area offer a safe and fun place for your children on this night.
