Extractions: Holyoke, Colorado Also included was nutrition education for the residents of the community. Nutrition information was provided through local newspapers, grocery stores, and county fairs. Of the two towns in the county, Holyoke received the education program and Haxtun served as the control town. The 40-mile separation between towns isolated the control and intervention group. This article outlines the nutrition education program implemented by a team of Colorado State University Cooperative Extension faculty and students. An evaluation was conducted to test the effectiveness of the intervention.
Extractions: Fort Collins, Colorado Introduction Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains the leading cause of death in the United States (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1996), despite decreases in CHD mortality over the past few decades (American Heart Association, 1994; Hunink, et al., 1997). The prevalence of CHD has led to an increased interest in and need for prevention programs. Methods Program Participants and Leaders Eighty-three adults from Logan County, Colorado, were recruited for the Healthy Heart Program through advertisements in a newsletter distributed in the local hospital, Sterling Regional Medical Center, and throughout the community. There were nine Healthy Heart Program sessions offered over a period of four years from 1985 to 1989. Seventy-eight people completed the intervention sessions, each of which consisted of five weekly, two-and-a-half hour classes. The starting size of the intervention groups varied from six to 14 persons. Participants were recalled by telephone and a written reminder for three follow-up assessments given in March 1988, 1989, and 1990 to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the Healthy Heart Program. Fifty-five participants attended one or more of the follow-up assessments, each taking place during one morning session. This is an approximate 70 percent response rate. Drop-outs had moved out of Logan County, did not obtain blood lipid profile tests prior to the first class, had time conflicts, or did not express interest. However, baseline information was comparable to those who completed at least one of the follow-up periods.

Extractions: Source: ERIC Clearinghouse on Teacher Education Washington DC. Comprehensive School Health Education. ERIC Digest. Comprehensive school health education is a planned, sequential curriculum of experiences presented by qualified professionals to promote the development of health knowledge, health-related skills, and positive attitudes toward health and well-being for students in preschool through grade 12. Comprehensive school health education is one facet of the comprehensive school health program, which includes school health services and a healthful school environment, as well as health instruction. This Digest will focus on the instructional component of the comprehensive school health program. Schools are unique among U.S. institutions in their access to children. They are a logical place to provide health information, not only to improve health in the childhood years but to prevent illness, disability, and health care costs later in life. Health education literally empowers students to avoid health risks. CONTENT OF THE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL HEALTH INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM It is recommended that the following 10 areas be included in any comprehensive school health program, whether the program is integrated or a separate subject: community health, consumer health, environmental health, family life, mental and emotional health, nutrition, personal health, chronic and infectious disease prevention and control, safety and accident prevention, and substance use and abuse (Joint Committee on Health, 1990; Joint Committee of the Association, 1992). Once a comprehensive program is in place, topical issues such as HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancy can be incorporated into the program as needed. Each community should also build its health curriculum to reflect local needs, interests, and cultural and ethnic diversity.

The mission of the Utah Arthritis Program is to improve the quality of life for people affected by arthritis. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Utah Arthritis Program is focused on measuring the occurrence of arthritis in Utah, improving arthritis communications and education, and increasing participation in programs proven to help those with arthritis. We are working closely with the CDC, the Utah/Idaho Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, and local health departments to build a comprehensive, effective program.
