According to a historical marker out front, long before there was a university here, this land housed an Indian boarding school.

Extractions: (Photo courtesy of Fort Lewis College Center of Southwest Studies) The Colorado State Archives volunteer, Connie Ryan, has extracted names from the Fort Lewis and Grand Junction Indian Industrial Schools 1900 Federal Census. These enumerations were slightly different from the usual 1900 Census entries or the Federal Indian Census as there was a special section, "Special Inquiries Relating to Indians." The main section included the headings found on the 1900 Federal Census. In addition, however, this special section listed the tribe of the Indian as well as the tribe of his/her father and mother. There is also a heading entitled "Mixed Blood" which asked if the Indian had any white blood and how much. In the Grand Junction index several additional headings are usually filled out including, "Conjugal Condition," "Citizenship" and "Dwelling" ("Is this Indian living in a fixed or in a movable dwelling?"). The information found in these indexes is especially helpful since the Federal Indian Census before 1930 provided only information on the person's name, date of birth, gender, and relationship to the head of the family. After 1930 the Census provided information on the individual's degree of Indian blood, marital status, ward status, place of residence, and also included miscellaneous commentary. For a further explanation of the Federal Census and the Indian Census from 1885-1944, please see

Extractions: By Carla Rivera An apartment complex in Montclair housed students at the military- style academy, which is accused of abuse. Police in Montclair removed more than two dozen youths from a private military-style boarding school Tuesday, after a former employee and several former residents accused operators of administering abusive punishment. In an early morning raid, 26 youths were taken from an apartment complex used as a residence by the Ministerial Christian Academy. Investigators with search warrants confiscated handcuffs, shackles, computers, financial records and other documents, police said. Ricky Leslie, 39, of Montclair, described by police as a caretaker at the residence, was arrested on suspicion of rape with a foreign object and sexual battery of a female student. Police said Leslie is a registered sex offender. Police were led to the two-story apartment complex on a quiet street by accusations that youngsters had been restrained in handcuffs, left for hours in cramped, darkened storage rooms and forced into a cold swimming pool as punishments. The owners of the academy, Otis McIntyre, 47, and Doris McIntyre, 61, of

Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots.

A group of former boarding school students filed the case earlier this year in the U.S. Court of Claims. They said the federal government violated the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie by allowing "Bad Men" to come onto the reservation and abuse them. But in a 19-page decision, Judge Diane Gilbert Sypolt said the plaintiffs didn't follow an arcane procedure set out in the treaties regarding the "Bad Men." The former students should have first asked the BIA to hear and adjudicate the case before coming to the courts, she wrote. "Having failed to bring their claims administratively, plaintiffs are barred from seeking relief from this court," she wrote in the unpublished October 29 opinion that granted the Department of Justice's motion to dismiss. Sypolt also said the former students could not rely on the treaties to establish a trust relationship that gives rise to money damages if breached. She said the "physical, sexual, and physiological abuse claimed by the plaintiffs in this case, even if true" is beyond the limited authority of the claims court.

Extractions: Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, is famous for Late Paleozoic ichnofossils. However, little work on the vertebrate trace fossils has been done in the park for nearly 70 years. A preliminary reconnaissance of the Coconino Sandstone within the park, during 1993, indicates that tracks are very common. Further work should be conducted on the Paleozoic tracks in the Grand Canyon for both scientific research and to assist park management. ... Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) has been well known for Late Paleozoic tracks since 1918 when Richard Swann Lull of Yale University described some specimens collected by Charles Schuchert in the Hermit basin. Charles Gilmore, of the Smithsonian Institution, later visited GRCA and collected many specimens. Gilmore described these trace fossils in a series of papers (Gilmore, 1926, 1927, and 1928). Over the next 40 years other specimens were described from the same strata outside the park, but virtually no further work has been performed within GRCA. We have recently conducted a preliminary survey for tracks in the area around the Hermit Trail in the Permian Coconino Sandstone. The purposes of this paper are to briefly review the ichnology of the Coconino and to present some initial observations on the new finds. ... [

Feedback SISTER SCHOOL PROJECT Introduction On November 18, 2000 four members of the Superior Elementary School community left Denver to travel to Khandbari, Nepal home of their sister school, the Surya Boarding School. The team consisted of Dr. Holly Hultgren, Principal of Superior Elementary, 5 th grade teacher Gregg Rice, Reading Specialist Amy Schackman and parent representative Mary Commander. The journey was very successful in the endeavor to build and enhance the relationship with their sister school. The group brought eight boxes of school supplies and hundreds of pen-pal letters from the students at Superior. The staff and students of Surya Boarding School were also very enthusiastic to welcome the guests from their sister school, Superior Elementary. The team from Superior Elementary shared lessons for 4 days with the students at Surya Boarding School in areas such as literature, poetry, geography, science, and oral hygiene. All lessons at Surya are taught in English and the team was pleasantly surprised at the proficiency of all students, especially their command of the English language, both written and verbal. A dinner was hosted by the Superior contingent for the staff of the Surya Boarding School to get to know one another on a more personal basis and to discuss educational strategies. It was a memorable and very successful "meeting of the minds."

Extractions: During April 1-May 25, 1994, a chain of measles transmission began in Breckenridge, Colorado, and extended into nine additional states; a total of 247 measles cases were reported, representing 36% of all U.S. measles cases reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (excluding those reported from U.S. territories) through July 2 (week 26). The source of exposure was unknown but is believed to have been an out-of-state tourist who probably visited Breckenridge during March because 1) no measles cases had previously been reported in Colorado during 1994, and 2) the only common exposure appeared to have been at a ski resort visited by many out-of-state travelers. Persons associated with spread of measles from Breckenridge were predominately school- and college-aged. This report summarizes the investigation of this chain of interstate measles transmission. A total of 15 measles cases with rash onset during April 4-21 occurred in Breckenridge. Persons with measles ranged in age from 16 years to 46 years (median: 27.6 years). All cases met the CDC measles clinical case definition (1); 12 were serologically confirmed. All 15 ill persons either lived in Summit County (Breckenridge) or three neighboring counties (Arapahoe, Chaffee, and Park) or worked in tourism-related services in or near Breckenridge. Twelve of the 15 ill persons are believed to have been exposed to the unidentified source, and three cases resulted from secondary transmission. Two cases occurred among high school students; no further transmission in schools was reported.
