Reservation Boarding Schools The reservation boarding school system was a war in disguise, the Struggle for American Indian Liberation,Aigis Publications, Littleton, colorado,1995. http://www.twofrog.com/rezsch.html
Extractions: The Reservation Boarding School System was a war in disguise. It was a war between the United States government and the children of the First People of this land. Its intention was that of any war, elimination of the enemy. The reason this war is difficult to recognize is because it was covered by the attractive patina of a concept called "Manifest Destiny." Manifest Destiny was a philosophy by which the white european invader imagined themselves as having a divine right to take possession of all land and its fruits. The reason that the Concept of Manifest Destiny was so effective was because, as it steam rolled across the land, it dragged the masses with it. The hooks that dragged these masses were many and were forged by Christianity and the Christian imprimatur. Although the fuel that energized Manifest Destiny was economic, the inspiration was in its alignment with divine will. This quote from the essay

Extractions: ENTRY LEVEL Thomas E. Wilcox Age: First job: Instructor, Fountain Valley School of Colorado, Colorado Springs Current job: President, Baltimore Community Foundation I had just graduated from college in 1970 and was hired as an instructor in history, government, and math at the Fountain Valley School of Colorado, which is a suburban independent school in Colorado Springs. I stuttered so badly that the public-school system would not hire me. This was also the period during which the civil-rights movement was gaining ground and the war in Vietnam was raging and the cities and colleges were burning. I was sympathetic to the civil-rights leaders and to the antiwar movement, but I had very little patience with people who were burning draft cards and making fools of themselves when they could have been working to bring about real change. Another guiding principle for me has always been that one is more likely to effect change using honey rather than vinegar. It was also a time when independent schools and colleges were really beginning to take integration seriously. The Harvards and Fountain Valleys were moving from having a couple of token people of color to having truly diverse student bodies. As educational institutions were beginning to recruit students from all backgrounds, I realized the unique role schools could play in realizing this new American dream of inclusion. One could argue that independent schools had originally existed to perpetuate a privileged class, but in this new era, those institutions came to realize that they could ensure the Jeffersonian ideal of education, which is to ensure democracy.

Extractions: The story of Fountain Valley School began in the late 1920's with the vision of an extraordinary woman, Elizabeth Sage Hare, who believed that a school tied to traditional acadeimc excellence and progressive ideals of individual dignity and creative promise would thrive in the West. She convinced her close friends to join her in establishing a boarding school certian to rival the most prestigious schools in the East The 1,100-acre Bradley Ranch, nestled in a valley in the foothills of Pikes Peak, was deemed the perfect location. Its Hacienda, "Casa Serena," designed by renowned architect Addison Mizner, would become the School's focal point and inspiration for what was then, and remains today, a place of permanence in a world of change. Extractions: Introduction Task Process ... Credits From the time that treaties were first made between Native People and European People, the subject of education was addressed. At some point, it became a policy to build boarding schools far away from the homes of the children who had to attend them. Some well-known boarding schools were Phoenix Indian School in Arizona, Ft. Lewis School in Colorado, Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, and Shawnee Mission School in Kansas. There were well over 50 boarding schools in America. What was life like for the children who were sent away to these kind of schools? In many cases, the children were taken from their families by force. The mission of some boarding school administrators was called assimilation . This meant that all the cultural teachings learned at home were taught to be wrong, and the so-called civilized teachings were to be learned instead. Often, if anyone was caught even speaking in their native tongue, they were severely punished, including being beaten.

Extractions: Boarding school involves the combination of the residing of pupils at an institution away from their family and home, and the instruction and endowment of education to students at the same place. The term boarding school fundamentally refers to classic British boarding schools, and most boarding schools around the world are modeled on the classic British boarding school. Boarding schools have specified rooms or allotted areas for different activities that occur throughout the day as defined by the boarding school administrators. These activities have a predefined structure and time set by the institution. These predefined schedules and norms are to be strictly followed, the failure of which could earn punishment. These rooms include the dormitory, where pupils share sleeping quarters, particularly on bunk beds, the refectory, where pupils take meals at fixed schedules, and the study hall, where pupils do their academic work. It also has facilities for bath and washing, and a storehouse for the storage of residents' belongings. Boarding schools also provide a playground for games and activities for the students The term boarding school is derived from the usage to board in school, which means to stay or reside in the school. Many public schools ("private school" in American English) are boarding schools. They involve long-term separation from one's parents and culture, and thus give rise to a phenomenon known as the TCK or third culture kid. Pupils may be sent to boarding schools between the ages of two and eighteen; they can be sent to any number of specific types of boarding schools, from nursery boarding schools (or Kindergarten boarding schools) to senior preparatory boarding schools. The amount of time one spends in boarding school also varies considerably, from a brief period of 1 year to more than 12 years in boarding school.
