Extractions: Hoyt Foundation The mission of the Stewart W. and Willma C. Hoyt Foundation, Inc., created to perpetuate the Hoyts' charitable interest, is to use its resources to enhance the quality of life of the people of Broome County, primarily through judicious grantmaking. Originally established as a private foundation in 1970, the Hoyt Foundation has been a Supporting Organization to the Community Foundation for South Central New York since January 2001. Teri Goodall-Komar, Chair William H. Rincker top of page Stewart and Willma Hoyt were long-time residents of the Binghamton area, living for many years in a home at 70 Front Street. That home is now the headquarters for both the Community Foundation for South Central New York and the Hoyt Foundation. Throughout their sixty years of marriage, the Hoyts maintained a pattern of regular giving to their church and to arts and social service organizations in the Broome County area. Two years after Stewarts death in 1968 at the age of 94, Willma established the Hoyt Foundation with assets based on their early investments in IBM. When she died in 1982, also at 94, the Foundation received its funding $9 million from her estate. As a Supporting Organization (an official IRS designation), the Hoyt Foundation continues to have its own Board of Directors and make its own grants. But as a result of its alliance, it maintains a close working relationship with the Community Foundation, sharing its vision and forming an even stronger front to seek solutions to critical issues facing the community.

This short report identifies and reviews five approaches to alternative funding: grants development; revenue diversification; the solicitation of corporate donations; alumni associations; and community college foundations. References for further reading on these topics are provided in a concluding bibliography. WHAT ADMINISTRATIVE STEPS NEED TO BE TAKEN TO SECURE GRANTS? Several of the most well-known public and private funding sources continue to be receptive to proposals submitted by community colleges. Such sources include the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Kellogg Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Mellon Foundation.
