Most of these coins have been buried for over 1600 years. They could be Roman, Greek, Arabic or Byzantine (though the vast majority will be Roman). Now you can own them for much less than you would expect to pay for genuine ancient artifacts found by metal detectorists in the Black Sea region of Eastern Europe. Extractions: type="text/javascript"> Clear Instructions on How To Do (just about) Everything Web eHow.com Home > Collecting Protect your coins and you may not have to clean them at all. The question of whether of not to clean a coin collection is one that is hotly debated among collectors. Steps: Store your coins in plastic pockets made especially for this purpose. They are available individually and in sheets made to place in albums. Protect your coins from exposure to the elements and try not to scratch or mar them through mishandling. Know that any cleaning of your coins will potentially affect their value. When in doubt, leave your coins as is and consult a professional coin dealer for advice. Clean your coins, if you feel you must, with products such as ammonia, vinegar, rubbing alcohol or lemon juice. Allow coins to soak in a container of the liquid until any dirt or encrustation has been dislodged. Allow coins to air-dry or pat them dry with a soft, clean cloth. Do not rub or polish. This may scratch the surface of the coin and will remove metal from the coin's surface. Any wear will decrease the value of your coin.

Extractions: type="text/javascript"> Clear Instructions on How To Do (just about) Everything Web eHow.com Home > Collecting So you want to be a numismatist. Good for you. Grab your magnifying glass, and let's get going. Steps: Decide what type of collection you'd like to build. Do you want coins from a particular location or time period, coins with stars on them, just dimes? You may just want to dig through your pockets and start with what you find there. Learn all you can about the particular coins you choose. Many books and Web sites are dedicated to coin collecting, and they can teach you all of the basics such as what the grades are and the appropriate prices for particular coins. Complete a set. Collect one of each year and mint mark of your coin of choice. (A mint mark tells you where the coin was made.) Start looking for discontinued coins. Dollars, half-dollars, dimes and quarters minted before 1965 were still made of silver. Pre-1970 silver dollars and half-dollars are also at least half silver. Today, only special collector's mintings contain silver (at a ratio of 40 percent silver and 60 percent copper). Subscribe to coin publications such as "Coin World" or "Coinage Magazine."
