Extractions: TIPS ON TEACHING AND CORRECTING STROKE TECHNIQUE WITH AGE GROUPERS By: Greg Cronauer Stroke technique is critical for swimmers at any level but especially for 10-unders. The key is a constant stream of instruction, critique and feedback of every swimmers' stroke. In another article I described the difference between group instruction and individual instruction . I like to break down the individual instruction into these 3 categories: "Snippet" : This is a quick verbal or visual cue I give to the swimmers between repeats of a set or while they are swimming. E.g.: " Julie, fingers together! Tommy, keep that head still! Sarah, try to shoot that right hand deeper. " A visual "snippet" might be pointing your finger at your high elbow as the swimmer turns to breathe on freestyle, or pushing your hips up as they do backstroke. (We always put the younger swimmers in the outside lanes so the coach and swimmer can see each other clearly. The coach walks up and down the deck constantly giving them opportunity for verbal snippets at either end of the pool and visual snippets in between.) "One-on-one" : ?" Pat the swimmer on the back and watch them for the first repeat, giving them a thumbs up if it's what you want or stopping them for a re-explanation if they don't seem to get it. A one-on-one should take between 30 and 60 seconds, even if you have to pull them out to manipulate their limbs on deck.

It's All About Attention Early on in my spiritual studies one of my teachers told me that if I wanted to study with him, I could study with no one else. At first, I found this rule very restricting and struggled with it greatly (I had a mechanical habit of seeking advice from many people all the time). As time went on, however, I came to understand the reason for this restriction. By not allowing me to seek input from others, this restriction forced me to focus my attention in only one place, and in doing so, sharpened my attention so greatly that I learned and experienced much in a short amount of time. With the advent of the Internet and other sorts of media, our world has shrunk and we have access to so many more different types of spiritual teaching. Theres a tendency to get caught by the glamour of this one, the dazzle of that one and the promises of yet a third one. We may dabble in meditation, chanting, praying, yoga, bodywork, astral travel, communication with various kinds of spirits and so on. But what we need to remember in our spiritual journeys is that beneath all the different trappings of any kind of study is the development of attention. Every teacher may approach this differently, but ultimately they seek to develop the level and focus of our attention. Why? Because we create that which we attend to. Our attention is a tractor beam that calls to us that which we focus on.

In state secondary schools over the last two decades the amount of time devoted to teaching rugby has seriously diminished. A P.E. teacher in the sixties and seventies could devote up to 2 hours a week on teaching rugby for a whole term. Now with National Curriculum restraints the teaching time could be as little as 12 hours in total for the year. As a result of this most young players playing at or near National level are seriously handicapped in the team game by a deficiency in all round technical skills. Players may be stronger, more powerful, faster, and possess sound knowledge of their nutritional needs, but struggle with the skills needed to play this faster, dynamic game. How much do we emphasise or encourage the two sidedness of games play?

Extractions: My parents were quickly approaching retirement age (44 and 50) when I was born. They jokingly called me their little surprise package. I suppose that I was for two people who could have easily been grandparents. The way that they decided to deal with a toddler in their golden years was to do exactly what they were planning to do anyway and simply take me along. So they dressed me at 3 years old in my little suit, taught me how to behave when we went out and of course made sure I said please and thank you. My mother loved telling the story of taking me to the Windsor restaurant (very chic!) and get a total charge out of watching the waiters get such a kick out of the three year old who said Ill hab duh chateau briand, blood rare puh-dees. I still order my steaks that way. I was reminded of what my parents taught me recently when my partner, Brad, noticed that I had taken special care in cleaning - I think it was the windows or some such and made a special point of saying thank you to me and telling me how much that extra effort meant to him. From my perspective it was such a little thing. I dont even remember exactly what he was thanking me for but what really stuck was the sincerity of the thank you. I mean I can still remember as I write how good that made me feel. I felt acknowledged, valued, loved, important and that my contributions even the small ones were noticed and valuable. My parents were teaching me how to behave in a restaurant but Brad was teaching me about being valued.
Notes & Reflections At its essence, coaching involves the coach observing a teacher teaching a lesson and discussing the tips for Giving Feedback are offered below. http://www.ncrel.org/info/notes/fall03/change.htm
Extractions: There are several collaborative approaches to professional development. This issue will focus on three that have been used successfully as part of a long-term effort to introduce a new instructional strategy. They are coaching, modeling, and group discussions. The first part of this newsletter summarizes these approaches, and the second part illustrates how they were used to reform the instructional strategies of a large urban school district. Coaches often go through special training sessions to learn how to provide effective feedback and to promote reflection on instructional practice. "Tips for Giving Feedback" are offered below. Teachers also need training about how to listen to feedback. An online list, Principles of Receiving Feedback , is available from the Coalition of Essential Schools.
Extractions: Coaching Youth Wrestling I have been working with young wrestlers throughout my competitive and coaching career. During high school, I would stay after practice to work with our kids program. I encourage youth coaches to invite the varsity wrestlers to work with your local kids program. When training young wrestlers, the more feedback they receive the better off they will be. The varsity wrestlers can serve as role models for the younger wrestlers and will also benefit from helping the kids. Also, encourage the youth wrestlers to attend varsity matches and vice-versa. Perhaps even develop a big brother program. Every summer during college, I ran my own day camps, worked at PennState Camps and took a team to Junior Nationals. I worked with kids in all different age groups, and these summers proved to be very beneficial and rewarding experiences for me. I enjoyed my work with the kids tremendously and saw how much the wrestlers benefited from their time on the mats. Summer is an excellent time for skill development. The kids are not busy with school and preparing for competition. The emphasis is on skill development, learning new techniques and having fun.
