Extractions: But if that's all ridiculously obvious, why do some people believe that just because they've taken classes , they can teach? (Or just because they've read lots of books, they can write one?) The problem isn't thinking that they can do it, the problem is thinking they can do it without having to learn, study, or practice. I'm amazed (and more than a little disheartened) how many people believe that simply by virtue of their being skilled and knowledgeable in something, they're implicitly qualified to communicate, mentor, teach, or train that thing. It devalues the art of teaching to think that because you've been a student, you can teach well. That because you've experienced learning, you can craft a learning experience. But with that out of the way, nobody needs a PhD (or in most cases any degree at all) in education or learning theory to be a good teacher. Just as there are plenty of great software developers and programmers without a CompSci degree. People

Extractions: Hockey Tips Teaching On-Ice Awareness Are your players always aware and alert on the ice? Developing awareness/alertness not only improves players' abilities to play both with and without the puck, but helps players avoid dangerous situations and prevent serious injuries. By being aware and alert, players can anticipate their next move and improve their abilities to read and react. When backchecking, it is important for the defender to be aware of the position of the puck, the developing play and the opponent being checked. By using the individual defensive tactic "head on a swivel", the defender glances alternately at the puck and opponent to read and react to the developing play. On offence, awareness helps players with and without the puck maximize offensive options. Reading the play ensures the puck carrier is aware of the positioning of teammates and defenders in order to react with appropriate individual or team offensive tactics. Reading the play allows players without the puck to provide support for the puck carrier by creating passing options, outnumbering defenders or adding movement and balance to the attack. To prevent serious injuries, players must be alert when in the "danger zone", the 3-4 metres in front of the boards, and should keep moving when in this area. Players should also be aware of opponents in the "danger zone", and never check, shove or bump an opponent who is in this area.

Extractions: Communication is vital to every program's success. 4 Words to Eliminate in Coaching: But - You - Can't - Try One thing to remember when it comes to communicating, the perception of the listener is what eventually determines the outcome, not the intention of the speaker. With just a little effort, we can improve our communication skills, get our point across more effectively, and avoid bruising of those fragile athlete egos along the way. When attempting to deliver constructive criticism, we often sever the construction from the criticism by inserting a but between the two. "That was a great effort, but next time try to get the ball to the setter." All the player remembers is "Next time get the ball to the setter.", thus the praise has been lost. By connecting the two with a more positive twist, both the praise and the instruction are absorbed, "That was a great effort, and next time we'll definitely get a swing on it."

FANTASY LEAGUE This week the wise and honest Guru talks about coaches and their pet theories - and about the importance of recognising genius and setting it free to fly off a platform of basics. Were I to approach this coach about his method, he would give me very sound arguments in its favour and, indeed, I have seen how effective it can be. The game is coached today, generally, in a very methodical way. When you teach young children at school, you do start with basics. You learn the alphabet, for example. In rugby, too, we learn its alphabet when we start the game. One thing the kindergarten teacher knows full well, though, is that if the children do not enjoy what they are doing, they will soon lose interest and learning will be retarded as a result of the lack of fun in the lessons. I have found after many years in the classroom, teaching, among other things, poetry (which, after all is, or should be, akin to rugby) that in the main it is, in fact, the subject and the teacher who are boring (the teacher makes the subject boring) and only sometimes the boy although, there are indeed some lads who are insensitive to the finer things of life and however exciting, joyful and stimulating you try to make your lesson and the subject, you know you are bound to fail where he is concerned. Nevertheless you try, hoping for the flash of light that will kindle the sensitivities into the flame called enlightenment.
