Extractions: Literary criticism is the study, discussion, evaluation, and interpretation of literature . Modern literary criticism is often informed by literary theory , which is the philosophical discussion of its methods and goals. Though the two activities are closely related, literary critics are not always, and have not always been, theorists. Modern literary criticism is often published in essay or book form. Academic literary critics teach in literature departments and publish in academic journals , and more popular critics publish their criticism in broadly circulating periodicals such as the New York Times Book Review , the New York Review of Books , the London Review of Books The Nation , and The New Yorker edit edit Literary criticism has probably existed for as long as literature. Aristotle wrote the Poetics , a typology and description of literary forms with many specific criticisms of contemporary works, in the 4th century BC Poetics developed for the first time the concepts of mimesis and catharsis , which are still crucial in literary study.

Extractions: THE LITERATURE MAJOR The College faculty holds that close reading of great literary works imparts wisdom and is, in fact, one of the modes of perceiving truth. Following these principles, the College courses in literature introduce students to the classics of the West systematically and with respect to divisions of both genre and historical time. Since literature is best understood in intimate relation with theology, philosophy and history, the major is well-advised to make extensive use of those curricular offerings Literary studies call for serious practice in composition. Writing assignments are both interpretiverequiring the application of logical thought to impressions that may be seen at first as emotional and aestheticand scholarly, in the sense that students must show evidence of research by documentation from primary and secondary sources. Literature majors take all 11 courses described below, providing them with a depth and range of understanding of Western literature that gives them the ability to make serious and well-informed judgments about primary and, to a lesser degree, secondary works. Lit 103 and Lit 104 are prerequisites for all other major courses.
