In many respects, Florida remains the forgotten state of the Confederacy. Although the third state to secede, Floridas small population and meager industrial resources made the state of little strategic importance to either side. However Floridas 13000 mile coastline proved invaluable for the production of salt, made by boiling sea water in large kettles or evaporating it in man-made tidal pools.

Extractions: Civil War As in all other conflicts in which fighting manpower was needed, Texas furnished more than its share during the Civil War. The State was predominantly on the Confederate side and the majority of the men donned the grey uniform to fight for Jeff Davis. The Secession Convention in February, 1861, commissioned Colonels John S. Ford and Henry E. McCulloch , both old Indian fighters and Rangers, to each enlist a regiment for border service for short periods, six or 12 months. McCulloch's and Dalyrimple's forces were consolidated and afterwards reorganized and enlisted for 12 months in the Confederate service as the First Texas Mounted Rifles This command was succeeded by an organization first known as the Frontier Regiment organized as State troops in 1862, and afterwards known as the 36th Texas Cavalry in the Confederate service. In the spring of 1864, Governor Murrah transferred the regiment to the Confederate service and it was sent to the coast. In 1863-64, another regiment was on the frontier commanded by Colonel James Bourland , which had several engagements with Indians. The last

On your right, lined up along State Street, is the 19th Maine Infantry, home at last from three years in the Army of the Potomac. On the balconies and porticoes of the famed hotel "The Augusta House" are various dignitaries including the Governor, the Adjutant General, the Mayor and their wives and guests. We don't know who the guy on the roof is. In the center is a little band of musicians who played for every regiment that left for the war out of Augusta; and for every regiment that returned here. Zarqawi left the country in May to seek medical treatment for a chest wound suffered in an American airstrike, but has now recovered sufficiently to resume his activities. However, he is preparing for a comeback in elections scheduled for December. His supporters believe he will be helped in part by the increasing impact of Iraqi gunmen and suicide bombers since Ibrahim Jaafari became prime minister in April. More than 1,400 people have since been killed, and many Iraqis who regarded Allawi as a ruthless leader now speak wistfully of the relative calm enjoyed under his rule. Allawi is in intense negotiations to create a new multi-ethnic secular coalition before the general election.
