Extractions: The 2002-2003 school year will see me returning to the block schedule after a two-year detour at Sterling Middle School. From 1997 to 2000, I taught US Government and Computer Applications on the four-by-four block schedule at North Hagerstown High School in Washington County, MD. In preparation for the transition there, the faculty underwent intense training in cooperative learning techniques. Even before that transition, the North High staff had been through the effort to shape the 9th grade into interdisciplinary teams (called ITO for Interdisciplinary Team Organization). The ninth grade Social Studies, English, Science and Math teachers operated with a common planning period and most of their students were taught as a block among the four teachers. Teachers created cross-curriculum units, which I converted into web pages. These units can be found on-line at http://www.cyberlearning-world.com

Extractions: As they are, the handouts that pop up in this online curriculum will probably have too small of a font, or too small of a space for your students to write their answers. To tailor the handouts to your liking, have a blank Microsoft Word document open. Highlight the whole handout (you can use "select all" under "Edit" in the toolbar at the top of your screen). Then right-click on your mouse and select "Copy." Now switch to your blank Word document, and paste the selected handout text into the document. Now you can add space, change font size, or make any other changes you would like. Teaching civics through classroom-based projects and games Valdone Verseckiene teaches a UNESCO class at Laurynas Ivinskis Gymnasium, Kursenai, in Lithuania. The class consists of students aged 15-18 from different classes. They normally discuss UNESCO World Heritage issues, but this school year, after the Beslan tragedy, she and her students have decided to learn more about peaceful conflict resolution in order to teach other students about developing tolerance and solving interpersonal problems in a peaceful manner. Like UNESCO schools all over the world, we do a lot of project work with partners from numerous countries around the world. The projects in which our students and teachers participate, range from art, environment, to drug prevention projects and other. I, personally, am interested in UNESCO World Heritage issues and my UNESCO Class changes every year, because some students leave school and others join the class, but the idea remains the same - young people interested in UNESCO World Heritage, feel responsible for making the world a better place to live and come together once a week for projects and activities.

Extractions: The goal of the human geography course is to help students understand how their region is changing historically, economically, and environmentally, and how these forces are shaping the future. In this applied civics unit, students are challenged to become involved in a project that can have a positive impact on their own communities. A major component of the lesson is a special session of the Anoka City Council, at which student teams present the issues they have researched and the solutions they are proposing. (See also, Teacher Perspectives section on Lesson Goal.) Planning The lesson follows units of study on a variety of themes in human geography, including where and why people live as they do in the world; human relationships in terms of space, population, and other features of human interaction with the physical features of their community; origins of students in the class; the impact of civilization and urban development on the community in which students live; and the concept that people have a responsibility as citizens to work for the common good, as opposed to being disengaged, disconnected, ungrounded learners who are inclined to be passive consumers rather than active, democratic citizens.

Extractions: Source: ERIC Clearinghouse for Social Studies/Social Science Education Bloomington IN. Teaching Democracy in East Central Europe: The Case of Poland. ERIC Digest. The end of communism in East Central Europe has posed a challenge and an unprecedented opportunity for civic educators in the United States. As educational reformers in former communist countries have begun to build new civic education programs that will support democracy, they have turned, in part, to the United States for assistance in overcoming an imposing array of obstacles left by the long night of communist despotism. These obstacles include the lack of classroom instructional materials, teachers with little or no understanding of democracy and no training in appropriate pedagogical techniques, teacher educators who themselves are ill-equipped to teach about self-government, and educational administrators who have no professional training and little understanding of the implications of democracy for the operation of schools. In response, some civic education projects involving cooperation among American and Central European educators are now underway in several countries in the region; more are needed. In Estonia, for example, the Jaan Tonisson Institute of Estonia and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems of the United States have been conducting seminars for teachers on core ideas of liberal constitutional democracy. In Hungary, civic educators from Syracuse University have been working with Hungarian colleagues on teacher training and curriculum-related activities.
