COLUMN OF THE AMERICAS : CINCO DE MAYO IS INDEPENDENCE DAY This is also the time to teach the history of cinco de mayo, of Mexico and ofthe continent. Examines the challenges that our communities face. http://www.voznuestra.com/Americas/_2001/_May/4
Extractions: AyAyAyAy!!!!!! The "gritos" heard round the world on Cinco de Mayo are primal screams commemorating a struggle against imperialism. May 5th celebrates an 1865 battle at Puebla, Mexico, pitting primarily Mexican indigenous forces against a powerful, imperialist, tax-collecting French army. September 15-16, on the other hand, are the days that Mexicans and Central Americans celebrate independence from 300 years of Spanish tyrannical rule. Cinco de Mayo is not an official U.S. holiday, nor should it be, though it is said that it has become in effect more a Mexican American celebration than a Mexican one one that reflects the reality of living marginally in the United States. At the same time, Cinco de Mayo is in danger of becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the beer industry, an unofficial holiday with a white sale and a happy hour. Instead, Cinco should be proclaimed a day of cultural and spiritual independence for people of Mexican descent and Central Americans, too living in the United States. Because of demographic trends, Cinco as a community ritual will increase in importance. Here, because that historical battle is distant, perhaps Cinco will evolve into a day where many kinds of victories large and small are commemorated as well as the ongoing movements for dignity and equality. This is already the case in many communities where these celebrations manifest in different forms from ceremonies, essay contests and awards to political forums, educational conferences, parades and cruising.

Mexico s Independence Day is celebrated on September 16 an important national holiday for Mexico. This is a web based integrated six-day lesson plan dedsigned to help educate middle school students about the real significance of Mexico's Cinco de Mayo Celebration. "Learning about other cultures expands and enriches students' understanding of the arts, humanities, and the natural and social sciences. Teaching The Bible Obviously, the question is in what tone the schools teach the Bible. Ethnic celebrations (like cinco de mayo day in Texas) raise similar questions http://lists.ucla.edu/pipermail/religionlaw/1997-January/007328.html

Extractions: Teach For America's placement districts here confront many of the same challenges as other low-income school districts across the country. The recent publication of the Academic Performance Index (API) showed that all of the districts in which Teach For America places corps members rank in the bottom 50th percentile of California school districts. There is increased public pressure in the Bay Area to build strict accountability systems for improving student achievement. Corps members in the Bay Area span a large geographic area but still find ways to socialize, access Teach For America resources, and share experiences. Corps members meet monthly for corps building and professional development activities. Learning teams, which are grade-level and content area groups facilitated by experienced teachers and alumni, meet once a month to offer content-specific support and the opportunity to share best practices. Teach For America staff members in the Bay Area support corps members by making classroom visits, giving feedback, meeting to discuss challenges, and providing forums for corps members to come together professionally and socially. Additionally, Bay Area corps members are supported by a large Teach For America alumni community.

From pop icons (J-LO, Christina Aguilera) to condiments (salsa), south of the border is main street. Perhaps nowhere is this influence more evident than in the explosive growth of Mexican restaurants in the past 10 years. Corner taquerias have boomed. Chains Americanized and popularized tacos, and burritos, exposing mainstream America to Mexican food and drink. The Margarita is arguably now the world's best-selling cocktail, Corona is the seventh biggest beer brand in the US, the leading import by a mile, and six of the top 16 imported beers come from Mexico.
Today In History: May 5 finally allowing teachers to teach evolution. The trial did bring Dayton, In the United States, cinco de mayo has become an occasion to celebrate http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/may05.html
Extractions: Prints and Photographs Division On May 5 , 1925, high school science teacher John Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution in one of Tennessee's public schools. Scopes had agreed to act as defendant in a case intended to test Tennessee's new law prohibiting the teaching of evolution in its public schools. On May 4, the day before Scopes's arrest, the Chatanooga Times had run an ad in which the American Civil Liberties Union offered to pay the legal fees of a Tennessee teacher who was willing to act as a defendant in a test case. Several Dayton residents hatched a plot at a local drugstore. They hoped that a trial of this type would bring much needed publicity to the tiny town of Dayton.

Extractions: "We didn't find any lessons on the Internet that addressed the needs of our students or could be accessed by them," Geeti Ghose recalls. "We have students representing many different ethnic backgrounds, so the content area of celebrations seemed very appropriate. We wanted to choose the most important holidays of each country to highlight." So Ghose and teaching partner Joanne Lindevald set out to create Celebrations Around the World , a thematic unit on multicultural social science studies. Both are teachers for the Contra Costa County Office of Education at Liberty High School in Brentwood, California, who work with severely handicapped students with developmental and physical disabilities. A student shows Joanne Lindevald her choice of color for an Easter egg.
