Extractions: John has lived in China for 5 years. He is a grad student in applied linguistics. Language is my passion. I'm in China now to master Mandarin Chinese. I have been achieving this goal by teaching English, which I also happen to really like. My interest in languages also extends to: English , my native language, Spanish , which I studied throughout high school and also in Mexico during college, Japanese , which I started studying Japanese on a whim in my freshman year in college but ended up majoring in. I studied for a year in Osaka, Japan, while living in Kyoto. I absolutely loved it. When I realized in Japan that languages and linguistics were for me, I also decided to begin studying Chinese . I had to take the courses for my major and two minors for my remaining two years at UF, but I was still able to squeeze in three semesters of Mandarin Chinese. Early in my junior year, I was already planning on coming to China after graduation from UF. Now that I'm here, I spend a lot of my free time studying Chinese and practicing my speaking with my Chinese friends. I don't have any trouble with normal conversation anymore, but I still strive to build on my vocabulary, and my reading and writing needs further work as well. I started Shanghai Normal University's graduate program in Applied Linguistics in Fall 2005. My study of Chinese has come a long way since its humble beginnings at UF. Here I'll try to offer some advice to those headed down the same path. The good news is it's getting more and more painless (although pain will always be an element of the study of Chinese!).

When students feel confident, teams of three or four students at a time can then take their tales to other classes for a storytelling concert. If older students are sent to the younger grades, ask the younger grades to thank the storytellers with drawings inspired by their stories. 1001 Nights Festival This is a continuing storytelling session in which a story is begun and then left open-ended at a crucial point. The next day the story is completed and a new one begun and left open-ended at an exciting moment. Stories could be selected from the Tales of the Arabian Nights and told in this fashion, as in the style of Shahrazad, its great storyteller. According to legend, she told stories in this way to a sultan for 1001 nights, which is why the stories of the Arabian Nights is also called "1001 Nights." A Picture is Worth 1000 Words A class selects a classical painting. Looking at the painting for inspiration, the class constructs the first few sentences of a tale through group discussion and suggestion. The paragraph is then sent on to another class which reads the first paragraph and adds on another. The process is repeated including as many classes as possible until the tale seems finished. All the classes then gather to hear the result of their group effort read out loud and to see the painting, that inspired the story.
