The temporal coverage represents the status of China as of 31 December 1990. These files are organized by national and individual province level. The national level (two files) covers all of the administrative regions of China. The data at the province level separates administrative regions into individual provinces and autonomous regions. The county boundaries of 31 provinces and regions are identified individually in 31 files. The datasets includes information on the geographical locations, areas, a dministrative division codes, and names for all counties and islands, which are both in Pinyin. The collection supports and enhances the research and scholarship of the School curriculums by providing visual and geographic coordination of data. This collection contains selected single sheet and portfolio maps available from federal depository, military ( National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency formerly National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), which succeeded Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) ], and commercial sources. Although consisting of mostly current material, some older resources are retained for historical research, focusing primarily on military history and NSA studies. Material is acquired in support of the curriculum and degree programs of the school. Emphasis is placed on acquiring international materials and resources in significant military arenas. Extractions: Technology and Music Composition is a tutorial on the use of the Finale software program, a sophisticated notation and composition package traditionally used by serious composers rather than undergraduates. It is deployed in Reed's Music Composition Lab and has been used extensively and with great success. The author of the tutorial, Professor David Schiff, is extremely pleased with the results and is interested in pursuing a follow-up project to extend and enhance electronic resources for music composition at Reed. Interactive Tutorials for Artist Books developed by Geri Ondrizek and Michael Knutson helps students learn how to use computer graphics software, such as Photoshop, Premier, and Pagemaker, for senior theses and other major projects. The use of the tutorials has been very effective, prompting the art department to seek ways to expand the Computer Graphics Studio in order to accommodate growing student interest in this area. The Interactive Tutorial on Rhythmic Analysis developed by Ellen Stauder in the English Department allows students to explore different notational methods for analyzing and marking rhythmic sequence in poetry. Students have used the web-based tutorial in conjunction with her course, Poetry and Poetics as well as in the Introductory Linguistics course. Feedback from students has been very positive. Professor Stauder plans to expand the tutorial to include free verse, to add exercises, and to improve some aspects of the user interface.

As farmers in the Texan High Plains pump groundwater faster than rain replenishes it, the water tables are dropping. North America's largest aquifer, the Ogallala, is being depleted at a rate of 12 billion cubic metres (bcm) a year. Total depletion to date amounts to some 325 bcm, a volume equal to the annual flow of 18 Colorado Rivers. The Ogallala stretches from Texas to South Dakota, and waters one fifth of US irrigated land. Many farmers in the High Plains are now turning away from irrigated agriculture, as they become aware of the hazards of overpumping, and realise water is not in endless supply. Back to top MEXICO CITY Mexico city is sinking because of the amount of water being pumped out from beneath its foundations. One of the largest and most populous cities in the world, it was once a lush land of lakes. But over the last 500 years the lakes have been drained and the surrounding forests chopped down. As the city grew in size, the water problem magnified. With no adequate drainage system, today rainwater mixes with sewage and is used for irrigation. The city is now at serious risk of running out of clean water. An estimated 40% of the city's water is lost through leaky pipes built at the turn of the century.

By land, migrants from Eastern Europe and Asia follow the Balkan route from former Soviet republics and satellite states through Greece. Illegal immigrants from North Africa also travel across the Mediterranean to Sicily. Many arrive in Britain by smuggling themselves from northern France across the English Channel to the port of Dover. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, young women from Russia, Estonia, and Latvia are trafficked to Finland, where prostitution is legal, to work in the sex trade. Russian women are also trafficked to Norway and Sweden, where prostitution is also legal. According to Interpol, most human cargo is being smuggled into the United States by plane. Increasingly, victims travel first to South Africa, where fraudulent documents may be obtained. Interpol also suggests that seafaring ships usually approach America via the Pacific Ocean, where Canada has also intercepted a number of cargo vessels carrying illegal Chinese immigrants trying to enter through the Vancouver area. But recently, use of this method has declined. Instead, many trafficking victims are arriving in Central or South America to enter the U.S. via Mexico.
