Chile stretches over 4 300 km (2700 mi.) along the southwestern coast of South America, a distance roughly the same as San Francisco to New York, or Moscow to Lisbon. At the same time, its width never exceeds 240 km (150 mi.), making the country more than eighteen times longer than its widest point. The most obvious factor in Chiles remarkable slenderness is the massive, virtually In the centre of the country, however, is a long and expansive river valley, a five hundred mile corridor occupied in the north by vineyards and farms and in the south by primeval forests and enchanting lakes. Santiago, the capital, anchors the northern and more prosperous section of the central valley. The lush Lake District to the south is the homeland of Chiles indigenous peoples, the Araucarias. Also part of Chile is two notable Pacific islands - the Juan Fernandez Islands and the famous Easter Island, both are administered as national parks. The Juan Fernandez Islands are located about 670 km off the Chilean coast, while Easter Island is situated at a 3700 km distance.

Let's skip ahead a few hours, past his encounters with immigration officials of both countries and an hour and a half of bouncing along dirt roads between them, past the catamaran ride on Lago Todos Dos Santos from Peulla to the black sand beaches of Petrohue. We're finally on the last leg of the lake crossing, a much smoother bus ride from Petrohue to Puerto Varas. Eleven hours into the day's trip, I was less than enthused by a stop at Petrohue Falls. All I wanted was to get to my hotel and crash. Besides, after Iguassu how impressed could I be? But these falls were worth the delay. What they lacked in vertical splendor they more than made up in the sheer force of rushing water. The falls also provided me with the best view yet of the Osorno Volcano, inactive these last 150 years but still a mesmerizing sight. I finally arrived in Puerto Varas, a hamlet of 30,000 on the edge of Lake Llanquihue. Once again I thanked the gods of banking and networking. How did travelers survive before the worldwide ATM network gave us access to our money any time and nearly anywhere? And then I enjoyed the view from my window of the lake and that magnificent volcano. It was startling to be in a place with air so clear; Osorno was able to dominate my view and my thoughts from hundreds of kilometers away.

Extractions: Dr. Winchester's research interests include the application of lichenometric and dendrochronological techniques to the dating and interpretation of environmental changes. Her recent work has included studies of: the frequency of recent glacier movements, outburst floods and debris flows in southern Chile and Kazakhstan. On-going research in Chile is focused on analysis of landscape processes and climatic change around the North Patagonian Icefield, an area that is ideally placed for Southern Hemisphere climate studies, but whose geomorphology is little known. Using dendrochronology and lichenometry Dr. Winchester's main aim in Kazakhstan is to link catastrophic debris flows in the northern Tien Shan Mountains to climate changes that have been in progress there since the mid-nineteenth century.
