Extractions: Today's Globe Opinion Magazine Education ... K-12 July 17, 2005 The instant message sent a chill down 14-year-old Kelleigh Prince's spine. ''How old are you?" the stranger asked the teenager, who had been surfing the Internet when the message popped up on her computer screen. ''Do you want to meet up sometime?" Prince, who lives in Revere, wrote back, but lied about her name and age and blocked the stranger's e-mail address. ''It was creepy," she said. Prince, who is a student at the Garfield Community Magnet School in Revere, didn't really know what to do when the stranger tried to lure her for a meeting, but she does now. She learned how to protect herself online when law enforcement officers gave a presentation at her Revere middle school, one of several schools providing lessons on Internet safety to students and teachers. Think of it as ''Stranger Danger" for the Internet generation. State law enforcement workers and child safety advocates in the last few years began training students and teachers at schools across the state about possible hazards on the Internet. Some schools make Internet safety lessons a regular part of their technology and computer classes. The emphasis of the training in Massachusetts, as it is in other states, is at the middle school level. ''That's the age where they want to be part of something, where there's a lot of peer pressure," said Patricia Massa, principal at Prince's school. ''They're an easy target for these people who go on the Internet and prey on people that are lonely or kids that are trying to be accepted or find a comradery."

Today, young people are taking much bigger risks with a bottle a beer bottle and it is no game. The average age when a child takes his or her first drink of alcohol is around 12 years old; that's somewhere in the sixth or seventh grade. Parents often struggle with what they should say to their kids about alcohol. They also struggle with when to start the dialogue. While no parent wants their child to grow up too early, parents unfortunately cannot afford to wait to address the issue. It is best to arm children with honest answers about health, safety and the dangers of underage drinking before they have fully shaped their attitudes and opinions about underage alcohol use. That means educating kids as young as six on how to protect themselves and make informed decisions about their safety.

Fire Prevention Week is an excellent opportunity to teach and re-teach children about the dangers of fire and how to prevent fire and fire-related injuries. On October 9, 1911, the Fire Marshals Association of North American, which became the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), inaugurated Fire Prevention Day. The date marks the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, a disaster that killed 250 people and destroyed thousands of buildings.

Do you know when to call 911? If you (or your kids) are going to go door to door trick-or-treating, you should play. Potential killers in our homes rarely come in the form of teddy bears; but, many seemingly innocuous products do pose substantial risks to our children. Carbon monoxide detectors that dont work, softball bats that sheer off at the top, and bike chains that snap are among many products that were recalled in the last year. Frequently, unless there was a registration procedure, parents are the last to know when a product has been recalled for design defects or safety problems. KidSource Online has links of searchable databases of toys, clothing, household items, sporting equipment, and more. Take a few minutes to find out what has been recalled and why.

This leaves no limits or checks on the kind of information that is maintained by and accessible to Internet users. Most people who use online services have mainly positive experiences. But, like any endeavor - traveling, cooking, or attending school - there are some risks. The online world, like the rest of society, is made up of a wide array of people. Most are decent and respectful, but some may be rude, obnoxious, insulting, or even mean and exploitative. Of course, like most crimes againt children, many cases go unreported, especially if the child is engaged in an activity that he or she does not want to discuss with a parent or teacher. The fact that crimes are being committed online, however, is not a reason to avoid using these services. To tell children to stop using these services would be like telling them to forget attending school because students are sometimes victimized on the schoolyard. A better strategy would be for children to learn how to be "street smart" in order to better safeguard themselves in any potentially dangerous situation. What Are the Risks?

Traditionally, online services have been oriented towards adults, but that's changing. An increasing number of schools are going online and, in many homes, children are logging on to commercial services, private bulletin boards, and the Internet. As a parent you need to understand the nature of these systems. Online services are maintained by commercial, self-regulated businesses that may screen or provide editorial/user controls, when possible, of the material contained on their systems. Computer Bulletin Boards, called BBS systems, can be operated by individuals, businesses, or organizations. The material presented is usually theme oriented offering information on hobbies and interests. While there are BBS systems that feature "adult" oriented material, most attempt to limit minors from accessing the information contained in those systems. The Internet, a global "network of networks," is not governed by any entity. This leaves no limits or checks on the kind of information that is maintained by and accessible to Internet users.

First, to give children and parents good skills to prevent abduction. Second, to address the anxiety created for parents and children alike at the thought of stranger abduction. Stranger Danger programs have been taught for decades. Still, all the evidence shows that children go willingly with strangers. Why? Because children don't hear what adults think they are saying. Reducing children's vulnerability requires that parents and children have basic information about stranger offenders and how they behave. It includes understanding what children believe about strangers and how that makes them more vulnerable. This chapter will help parents and children develop specific ground rules to enhance personal safety around strangers.
