Extractions: Illinois Valley Community College Abstract Introduction In the spring of 1999, I offered to teach a one-credit-hour class on the Project Approach on-site at a child care center in Princeton, Illinois, a small town in north central Illinois. I was delighted on the first night of class to find that the members of this class included teachers from three types of part-time early childhood programs. With great interest, I watched, listened, and documented the experiences of implementing the Project Approach that these teachers shared during our weekly class meetings. I was curious to see whether their experiences would support my earlier claim that doing project work provides continuity to programs in which children do not attend full time, or in which children follow irregular attendance patterns ( Beneke, 1998

Description: We made passports by stapling white paper to construction paper. Then from January until May we studied a different country. We studied Russia, Africa, Ireland, Israel, China, Antarctica, Australia, Mexico, Japan, France, Hawaii, and Saudi Arabia. Then for each country the youngsters wore a hat or a prop from that country (ex: France, beret). We took pictures of each child wearing his or her hat or prop. Then I glued the pictures into each child's individual passport and gave it to them along with a world traveler certificate at the end of the year. They had lots of fun "dressing up!" World Passport

Extractions: THE YOUNGEST students at P.D. Pruden Vocational-Technical Center this year are barely 3 feet tall and lean toward Power Ranger backpacks and Bugs Bunny sneakers. They are 4-year-olds - part of the Early Start programs of Suffolk and Isle of Wight County. The energetic tots also are important elements of a new child-care career-training program at Pruden. Started last year, the program is based in the wing in which horticulture students used to cultivate young seedlings. The demise of the horticulture program left room to create a classroom and two laboratory classrooms to house the new program, where secondary students learn to nurture the human variety of young sprouts. Stephanie Hall, 17, and a junior at Nansemond River High School, works part time after school with 2-year-olds at the First Baptist preschool in downtown Suffolk. She signed up for the child-care career block to better prepare herself for a career as a kindergarten teacher. ``It has been a lot more work than I expected,'' Stephanie admitted.

Extractions: How you evaluate a child care provider or teacher depends not only on your personal standards and preferences, but also on the age, temperament, and particular needs of your child. Is the center or home day care provider licensed? Can the provider offer parent references? If needed, is there transportation between the school and center? Is there a waiting list and, if so, how long is the anticipated wait? Find out if the program is closed for vacation and what holidays are observed. Also find out what happens when the provider/ teaching staff is sick. Who are the staff members with whom your child will have contact? If it is a private day care home, are members of the day care provider's family involved? Formal training in child development and early childhood education can vary widely among providers, ranging from no formal education to teaching credentials and Master's degrees. Are the staff able to care for children with special physical, medical, or emotional needs? There are, however, important values that all high quality care providers share. They are warm people who love children and relate to them well. These providers always treat children with respect and are able to set behavioral limits without being punitive or damaging to the child's self-esteem. The best way to draw an accurate impression of a child care provider is to spend time observing the provider's interactions with children during a variety of activities.
