Government funds are shrinking. Texas' number of impoverished households is growing. So how do we best educate the disadvantaged children in our state? Start early and work more efficiently, says Dr. Susan Landry. Education is too important to wait till kindergarten, says Dr. Landry, the Michael Matthew Knight Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. If a generation of children comes to kindergarten unprepared to learn to read, they may never catch up. Dr. Landry plays a key role in studying and improving the learning skills of Texas' preschool children. Director of the Center for Improving the Readiness of Children for Learning and Education (CIRCLE), she also heads the Houston-based State Center for Early Childhood Development. Since last year, she has overseen the Texas Early Education Model, or TEEM, an ambitious statewide effort to coordinate early-education programs for children from poor and high-risk backgrounds. Dr. Landry's work is one of many examples of how the University of Texas System's 9 academic and 6 health institutions are involved in the lives of Texas children from their very earliest years. UT System's institutions are also engaged in groundbreaking educational research for students of all ages, for example, as well as in educating and training a new generation of teachers for Texas classrooms.

Extractions: Set up in advance. If it is at all possible, have the space all set up before the first child appears. And if that is not possible, involve the arriving child in the preparation (Please help me move these chairs into a circle, for example.) It is hard to greet a child with enthusiasm and listen to what the child is telling you, if you are frantically, mentally, organizing your lesson plan. In a perfect world, you would walk into a classroom that you could arrange to fit your style that would be bright, airy, beautiful and full of well-organized supplies. And amazing transformations can take place in the most unlikely of settings. One teacher brings everything he will need each Sunday in those boxes that reams of paper come in large enough to hold stuff, yet not too heavy to haul. Out of one box come Beanie Baby animals with acting abilities to be shepherds, sheep, wise men, or Jesus, young children or whatever the story calls forth. Out of another box comes drawing paper, construction paper, crayons, scissors, glue and, of course, glitter. Another box could have snacks or books or puzzles even rhythm band instruments. And where did he get all these wonderful supplies? He printed a Wish List in the Sunday Bulletin and people in the congregation came up with most of what he wished for. Greet each child.

It is considered a critical stage of growth and development, with significant national resources being increasingly devoted to this educational level. Early childhood educators are considered specialists who are specially trained and certified, and the field has also emerged as a separate research area. The facilities that provide early childhood education include public and private kindergartens, elementary schools, day care centers, child care services (including home services), and charitable organizations such as religious congregations.
