Marine Chemistry And Geochemistry - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Devoted to the study of chemical processes in the ocean and chemical fluxes to and from the oceans. Extractions: Cafe Thorium Jeff Seewald Katrina Edwards , and Wolfgang Bach conducted research cruises to undersea hot spots in the Pacific, where chemical and microbiological transformations at high temperature and pressure take place in and around underwater volcanic systems. Such sites are accessible several miles below the surface only by remote samplers and underwater submersibles that take measurements and collect samples for analyses. Ed Sholkovitz measured chemical input to the surface ocean on a novel buoy-mounted aerosol sampler, catching dust as it falls on the waters off Bermuda. Bill Jenkins made monthly measurements of dissolved gases in the ocean, to understand ocean productivity and the physical processes that mix water to depth. Bill Jenkins and Ken Buesseler also joined an interdisciplinary team of scientists from three WHOI departments to look at ocean eddies off Bermuda, which alter the local physical conditions to induce plankton blooms that change chemical conditions as they move through the ocean.

The History Of The NIST/EPA/NIH Mass Spectral Database However, it is not only the automation of individual m/z mass spectral peakidentification Unfortunately, the true history is not so clean and neat. http://pubs.acs.org/hotartcl/tcaw/99/feb/history.html
Extractions: The History of the NIST/EPA/NIH Mass Spectral Database Developed in the 1970s, this system has become the backbone of today's GC/MS identification methods. Although MS has been around for nearly a century, before 1970 such instruments generated data of only the most rudimentary type. Most laboratories used mass spectrometers as one part of a complex identification process to determine the chemical structure of natural products, such as alkaloid drug candidates, or to determine whether an organic synthesis had been carried out properly to generate a compound of the correct molecular weight. MS data often were combined with NMR, IR, and UV spectroscopic data to give insight into the overall structure of a complex molecule. There were no data systems, and, actually, none was needed. For structural analysis, it was necessary only to introduce the sample directly to the mass spectrometer and generate a single representative spectrum to be manually deciphered. First, one had to identify the m/z value of each peak by manual counting (28 for nitrogen, 32 for oxygen, 149 for a phthalate ester impurity coming from plastic tubing, and so on). After the
