Extractions: As part of his efforts to build the department, Dr. Howard recruited a food chemist from Kansas State University, Fred A. Kummerow , who already had an established program of research in lipid chemistry and biochemistry. Kummerow arrived on the Urbana campus in September 1950 along with 6 students from his laboratory at Kansas State University (thus instantly doubling the size of the graduate student population in the fledgling department at that time). He was initially assigned a laboratory on the second floor of the Dairy Manufactures Building (DMB). With an expanding program and considerable industry funding, the DMB soon became too crowded. Kummerow's lipid chemistry group moved to the first floor of the Animal Sciences Laboratory (Z.John Ordal's microbiology laboratory was also there). In 1958, a gift of $6000 in the form of Missouri Pipe and Gas Company stock was given to the newly organized Illinois Heart Association (IHA). IHA then provided a grant to Kummerow for his research on the relationship between lipids and heart disease. It turned out that the gift was from Ms Ethel Burnsides of Paris, Illinois, who had been providing $25,000 per year of her stock as a tax deduction to various organizations

Problem Books/Workbooks Chemical Calculations by George I. Sackheim, 2000. ISBN 0-87563-955-0 List Price $14.80 Fifty years and hundreds of thousands of copies sold is quite a record for any book. We are more than thrilled to announce the 17th edition of this title. George Sackheim has combined the best features of the previous editions of Series A and Series B on the occasion of this golden anniversary edition. The long history of the success of this book is a direct result of Sackheim's pedagogical methods in bringing out logical reasoning and demanding that the student think through the problems as opposed to memorizing them. This book shows the student how to solve a chemical problem as well as explaining key concepts such as atomic structure, valence, nomenclature, and other problem areas. There are over 1,000 problems in this book. Workbook for General Chemistry by Bassam Z. Extractions: William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea "Scientist by training, teacher and public servant by trade, advocate by conviction, optimist by nature" that is the way Bassam Z. Shakhashiri describes himself. As Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Shakhashiri finds outlet for all four attributes, to which he might add a fifth: entertainer by avocation. Dr. Shakhashiri, as a matter of fact, is probably best known to the public at large for his annual program, "Once Upon a Christmas Cheery/In the Lab of Shakhashiri," ; seen on television throughout the country. The science-oriented "magic" show has played to packed houses at such varied places as the University of Wisconsin-Madison , the National Academy of Sciences and the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, and Boston's Museum of Science . The one-hour show as well as two half-hour shows are featured year round on PBS and on other stations. The shows are Dr. Shakhashiri's way of proving that "science is fun" (the legend on a
