Extractions: Appendix 4: Volumes in the Solubility Data Series (volume editors, title, date of publications) All scientists have a need to refer to handbooks. Some find their needs met by one comprehensive handbook, others may need to refer to many. Some handbook tables give evaluations and there is normally little question about their reliability. Other tables give an experimental quantity such as atomic mass, melting point, boiling point, vapor pressure, solubility, etc., and in these tables the reliability and the source of the numbers is often not addressed. . . . . most handbooks make little or no effort . . . to evaluate in a systematic way the data they present. The problem with any handbook is that often only one value is given, usually without error limits, without literature citation, and without mention of other data that were not used. Background information is available for some handbook data; for example, the IUPAC Commission on Atomic Weights and Isotopic Abundances publishes periodically the latest background information on atomic masses and isotopic abundances. The National Bureau of Standards Circular 500 (1952) on chemical thermodynamic data published relevant data in one part and the references in a second part.

Pathfinders > Biography This guide offers a list of sources for finding biographical information on chemists, with an emphasis on historical figures. While chemistry has a rich and extensive historical record, biographical information on most individuals is often sparse and limited to brief data about birth and death dates, education, employment, and major accomplishments. It's rare to find substantial published biographical information on chemists, unless the subject was very famous indeed. But perserverence and a little digging can often produce useful information. Q 141 A47; current edition in Engineering Ref.; check catalog for other editions. This is the primary "Who's Who" of U.S. academic science, but is limited to persons who were alive and working at the time of each edition's publication. Included: basic biographical background, degrees, positions, awards, research specialties, and addresses. Revised every several years; multiple earlier editions from the 3rd (1921) forward are shelved in the Chemistry Library book stacks.

Extractions: (History and Presence) The Department of Organic Chemistry, Masaryk University of Brno and Lachema, a.s. (Chemical Plant) Brno were in 1996 the organizers of the joint 12th Symposium on the Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds (SCHHC) and the 6th Blue Danube Symposium on Heterocyclic Chemistry (BDSHC). Co-organizing institutions were The Czech Chemical Society, Brno Branch, The Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague, The Departments of Organic Chemistry, Technical Universities, Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna, The Central Research Institute for Chemistry, Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Austrian, Hungarian and Slovak Chemical Societies. This event has been a follow - up of the long tradition of the meetings started in Brno. Symposium took place from September 1 to September 4, 1996 in the area of student campus belonging to the Faculty of Economy, Masaryk University at Vinaøská street. The symposium was a follow-up to the previous heterocyclic symposia founded in Brno in 1963 and the 5th Blue Danube symposium in Papiernièka - Èastá, Slovakia. This year's symposium proceeded under the auspices of the Rector of Masaryk University, Professor Eduard Schmidt and the Mayor of the City Center Dr. Jarmila Horová. The plenary lecturers and representatives of the organizer were invited to meeting with The Lady Mayor in the City Hall.

Extractions: HISTORY A brief history of the Department of Organic Chemistry The number of students who were interested in studying chemistry gradually increased and in 1924/25 114 regular and 131 extra-mural students were enrolled for chemistry courses. Apart from Professor and one assistant, The Institute of Organic Chemistry at that time employed one technician and one cleaner. The Institute of Organic Chemistry was situated in Building 8 on Kotláøská Street where it has remained till the present. Professor Frejka had submitted a proposal to train pharmacy students. However, this was achieved only after World War Two in 1950/51 when The Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was founded by Professor PhDr. V. Morávek. The lectures and practical training for pharmacists were arranged by the staff of The Institute of Organic Chemistry. We must not forget to mention the pioneering work of Professor J. Frejka and his new assistants RNC. Emil Rabuic and RNC. Josef Borkovec who became fully engaged in the renovation of the Institute, which had been destroyed during World War Two, and in the preparation of the facilities for education and research in chemistry. In 1961 a group of chemists interested in biochemistry formed The Department of Biochemistry which was led by RNDr. L. Skurský.

Extractions: Poland borders on the Czech Republic. As such, it is natural that a citizen of the Czech Republic should be interested in and knowledgable about the accomplishments of Polish women throughout Polish history. With that in mind, Lenka submitted the following short discussions of many women in Polish history. The women are listed in historical order. Nawojka Half historic and half legendary, Nawojka dressed as a boy to study under the name of Andrzej in Krakow after her parent's death. She was probably from Dobrzn and was, according to some, a daughter of town's mayor and, according to others, the daughter of headmaster of the school. She nearly received her bachelor's degree before being discovered. She ended in monastery. An article was written about her for a journal, Signs The information is based on Martin of Leibitz (d. 1464), an abbot from Vienna, who wrote her story in Senatorium sive dialogus historicus martini abbatis scotorum , Vienna, Austria, Leipzig, 1725. More information comes from Alexander Jordan
