Extractions: CU MFF Faculty General information T he Faculty of Mathematics and Physics offers undergraduate and postgraduates courses in Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. It also offers an undergraduate program for would-be teachers of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. The Faculty has nearly 1750 postgraduate and undergraduate full-time and more than 500 part-time registered students the current academic year (1997/98). An integral part of the pedagogic and research activity are international contacts. The 726 trips to 40 countries took place in 1997, totalling more than 13,500 days. We have welcomed 322 colleagues from 33 countries in addition to the many participants at meetings and conferences. The Faculty was the main organizer of 24 conferences with more than 2,500 participants, and co-organizer of 14 international symposia. Several Faculty members were key speakers at conferences abroad. This confirms the high quality of the research carried out at the Faculty. The success of the staff is important not only for the good name of the Faculty and that of Charles University, but also stimulates interest among the young to study natural sciences. Last but not least it provides an important and necessary financial contribution to the budget.

The $1.7 billion (2.6 billion Swiss franc) machine would provide two colliding 7-TeV beams of protons and would have physics goals similar to those of the now-terminated SSC. If approved LHC and its two detector facilities, ATLAS and CMS, would be housed in the existing tunnel used by the LEP electron-positron collider. And just as the U.S. Congress had expected the SSC to receive foreign contributions, so the CERN governors are counting on a $300 million ante from overseas, in this case possibly from the U.S. and Japan. Nagarajan et al., Physical Review Letters, 10 Jan. 1993). Previous superconductors containing ferromagnetic elements (Fe, Co, Ni) had had transition temperatures below 5 K. The Y-Ni-B compounds (with a small admixture of carbon) reported by the Tata scientists contain nickel fractions as high as 60%.

For a wide range of physical, chemical and biological systems, a mathematical description via ordinary or partial differential equations reveals behaviour in space and time ranging from steady and periodic solutions, to complex and chaotic dynamics. A wide range of analytical, asymptotic and numerical tools is available for the investigation of such dynamics. Motivated by some problems of current research interest, including the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky model of spatiotemporal chaos and convective fluid turbulence, this course will develop some of the techniques for the investigation of complex patterns and dynamics. Topics that we may encounter along the way include:
Extractions: The MSc Programme in Physics Physics is concerned with problems that range from minute particles to the universe as a whole. Quantitative methods are used to analyse the apparent complexity of the system in which we live. For this reason, the methods and results from this science are often applied to other fields such as Chemistry, Biology or Engineering. Graduates of the MSc in Physics will have experienced a balanced but diverse period of postgraduate studies and will be qualified to find employment in a wide range of professions. Physics graduates do not only find employment in universities or research laboratories but will frequently be found in computer companies, management consultants or in the field of telecommunications. The MSc in Physics at the University of Stuttgart is taught entirely in English and takes two years (four semesters) including a one-year thesis. Upon completion of this programme you will be awarded a degree which is equivalent to the German degree of "Diplomphysiker" and a qualified graduate of this programme will be entitled to continue to study towards a doctoral degree in Physics at a German university without having to fulfil additional academic requirements.

Extractions: Print publication: Issue 14 (21 July 1997) Abstract. We present a theory where the statistical mechanics for dilute ideal gases can be derived from the random matrix approach. We show the connection of this approach with the Srednicki approach which connects Berry conjecture with statistical mechanics. We further establish a link between Berry conjecture and random matrix theory. In the course of arguing for these connections, we also observe sum rules associated with the outstanding counting problem in the theory of Braid groups. We believe that these arguments, developed for a special example connecting the properties of eigenfunctions and random matrices to the second law of thermodynamics, will eventually prove to be more general. doi:10.1088/0305-4470/30/14/012
