Explorer Fact Sheet SAMUEL de CHAMPLAIN Samuel de Champlain was born around 1570 in Brouge, France. Brouge was an important port city and Champlain's father had been an officer in the French Navy. Champlain himself served as a French naval captain and also fought as a soldier in the war in B rittany. Later he was given the command of a Spanish ship sailing from Cadiz to the West Indies. For two years he sailed under the Spanish flag exploring the area along the coast from Panama to Mexico. He returned to France at the same time that trading for furs with the New World was becoming very profitable. By 1600, the businessmen of France were competing with each other for a monopoly of this trade. But Henry IV, the French king wanted to claim land in the New World and start French settlements there. He ordered that any company monopolizing the fur trade would also have to start a colony. King Henry IV persuaded Champlain to join an expedition to explore the land where the furs came from to s ee if it was suitable for colonization. Champlain left on his first voyage with two small vessels, hardly larger than fishing boats, to explore the area of the St. Lawrence River. Samuel de Champlain made twelve voyages to what is now Canada. On his first trip he followed the St. Lawrence River as far north as the Lachine Rapids above Montreal. Along the way he met Indians who discouraged him from trying to proceed further becau se of rapids and poor conditions extending far up the river. Champlain turned back, traded with the Indians, loaded his ships with a valuable cargo of furs, and returned to France.

Bibliography EXPLORATION AND EARLY EUROPEAN CARTOGRAPHY, 1534-1710 In this section we cover the whole of the great crescent stretching from Labrador down the valley of the Saint Lawrence River, into the region of the Great Lakes, and finally down the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico. We have tried to select maps which mark crucial phases in the development of French knowledge of this region, from the early delineations of the Dieppe School, through the extraordinary work of Champlain, down to the great synthesis eventually achieved by Delisle at the beginning of the eighteenth century. As we look at these maps we should reflect especially upon their role in the imperial venture. Just as for the "Indians" of Florida the stone column was to be the symbol of French possession of the land, so for other Europeans the very innovativeness and excellence of French cartographers seemed to give them a sort of claim to the lands that they delineated. Eventually, this claim was seen to be empty, since there was no build-up of population corresponding to the territorial pretensions. But before the political game was finally played out, at Québec in 1759, the maps stand as powerful testimony to the extent of French ambitions.

Abstract: This article focuses on colonial-era French mapping of the region between the French and British settlements in what is now the northeastern United States. This area was largely dominated by Iroquoian and Algonquian Indians, many of whom were allied with the French. In comparison to to the Dutch and British colonists, the French produced remarkably detailed and accurate maps of this region. These maps contain a wealth of information about Indian settlements, trade routes, and military activities during the colonial period. Keywords: CONTENTS Notes The French contributions to the early mapping of the northeastern United States are frequently overlooked. Usually when we think of colonial mapping of this area, English and in some cases Dutch maps come to mind. However, except for those areas that were actually settled by the Dutch or the English, French cartographers often made the earliest and the best maps of much of what is now the northeastern United States.

Extractions: Cartier was born in 1491. That is one year before Columbus sailed to the New World. He was born in a coastal town and learned to be a navigator. A navigator is someone who can read a map and make sure the ship gets to the right place. They could use the stars and a compass to find their position on the ocean. Cartier explored the coast of eastern Canada. He drew maps of St. Lawrence Bay, Anticosti Island, and Gaspe. They met the natives living there and learned more about the land. They did not find gold, spices, or silk, but they did make maps. When they went back to France, they also took two young Huron Indian men.

His first trip to North America was on March 15th as part of a fur trading expedition. Although he had no official assignment on the voyage, he created a map of the St. Lawrence River and, on his return to France on September 20th , wrote an account of his travels called Des sauvages (The Savages). Instructed by Henry IV to make a report on his discoveries, Champlain joined another expedition to New France in the spring of led by Pierre Dugua Sieur de Monts . He helped found the Saint Croix Island settlement which was abandoned the following spring when the settlers moved across the Bay of Fundy to found the Habitation at Port-Royal (which had been located with Champlain's assistance).
