Extractions: Types of Pottery From ancient clay jugs dug out of the desert sand to modern works of art on display in urban museums, ceramics and pottery span nearly all of human history and can be found everywhere on earth. From simple ingredients, artists can create vases, cups, pots, bowls and all manner of sculpture, adorned with any texture or color they wish. Given this infinite variety of final products, how can one identify the basic types of pottery and understand what separates them from each other? Tani Colleen Sims was born in Pasadena, Calif. While pursuing a career in medical and clinical research for allergy and immunology, Sims began exploring her American Indian ancestry. In 1970 she walked into a clay class and she has had her hands in clay ever since. In 1983 she went back to school and received her teaching credentials for ceramics, so began teaching pottery making to adults part-time. In 1994 she retired from medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and a year later bought the Clayhouse, which she still thoroughly enjoys. Here she describes the two most basic types of pottery: Earthenware.

Pottery Creating with clay is a very ancient form of expression. Even the firing of clay to make ceramics is a thousand year old art form. With pottery, function is a key point taken into consideration during the creative process. Lecturers however use both pottery and creative sculpting to search for new solutions and formulas to express current events and contemporary artistic ideas. Even large-scale clay pieces can be fired in the kiln or the Raku Fire oven. top

Extractions: "Trypillian Ceramics and Pottery " Trypillian World...It existed from the first half of the fifth century until the last quarter of the fourth millennium B.C. Now, on the territory of Ukraine, there are approximately 2,000 known Trypillian settlements and sepulchral mounds. The term "Trypillian" takes its name from the Neolithic people who lived in the area of Ukraine from 5,000 to 2,500 B.C. The most typical object found in the remains of Trypillian villages is handmade pottery, the crafting and ornamentation of which was at an advanced level. The powerful Trypillian design was of three colors: usually white and black against a red clay background. To the Trypillians, the pattern of spiraling and whirling meander, signified eternity and the cycle of life. Custom made Trypillian style ceramics and Hutsul style pottery are being crafted today by Myron and Marika Bokalo in the United States. Each piece is individually crafted by the two artists who create their own distinctive designs, incorporating the richness of shapes, patterns and colors of ancient Trypillia.

Extractions: Home Portfolio My Studio Firing Process ... Contact Chris Hi, I'm Christhoper Heede. Welcome to my website. I have been working in clay for more than twenty-five years. My work is inspired by nature, especially the high Sonoran desert with its expansive sky, beautiful monsoon storms, and the variety of life that lives there. Other influences to my work include Folk Art, Contemporary, Southwestern, and Oriental. I try to capture movement and fluidity in the forms I create on the potter's wheel. I also enjoy hand building, architectural ceramics, sandblasted glass, and commissioned work. I hope you find something you think is beautiful. Raku covered Jar with "Cholla" handle.
