Extractions: Some say the tradition began with the Celts, who lived thousands of years ago in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France. The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1, which marked the end of summer and the beginning of the dark, cold winter (the only two seasons the Celts recognized.) To help protect themselves and their crops during the long winter, the Celts staged a joyous harvest celebration called Samhain (pronounced sow-in), which means "summer's end." Some say Celtic priests burned crops and animals as part of the celebration. They also supposedly wore costumes and told each other's fortunes at this time.

On May 1, members of Fowlers Troop will mark the beginning of summer with the traditional Jack in the Green celebration. The unusual practice was revived by the Blackheath Morris Men in 1984 and each year anywhere from 15 to 50 of its supporters don fancy dress to uphold the tradition. Historically, May Day has always been a time of celebration from the Celts' Beltane to the Roman dedication of the day to the Goddess Flora (which gave us the May Pole). The Jack in the Green is part of this tradition.
