Our staff consists of: the Director of TRIO, Mary McLaughlin; the Associate Director of Upward Bound, Vicki Dye; the Associate Director of Woodson Institute, Sara White, Program Counselor, Rodney Porter, and the TRIO Administrative Assistant, Debbie Lilly. Each of the eight counties we serve also has a field teacher or tutor counselor. If you would like to know more about our staff, please visit the Staff page. Classic Upward Bound Enrichment Sessions Enrichment Sessions are what the Field Teachers/Tutor Counselors are in charge of facilitating and arranging the time and meeting place for. Each county group has two meetings a month that last two hours per meeting. There the students do several enrichment activities over the year. The enrichment activities involve such things as logic, mathematics, reading, writing and many more things. The students also get a chance to get some homework done during these two hour sessions, and the sessions sometimes include contests.

Cornwall is a long, hilly peninsula at the western foot of England where people have dug the ground for thousands of years. If there ever was one, the Cornish folk are a people of the Earth. First of all they are Celts, but they also have a long and illustrious history of mining. The ancients knew about the mines of Cornwall for copper but even more so for their tin, easily smelted from cassiterite (tin oxide). This mineral is very heavy and fairly hard, so it forms placers in the streambeds where it erodes from Cornish granites. Cassiterite is easily smelted in a hot fire to yield high-purity tin. So the peoples of Cornwall, whether they were the aboriginal Britons who built the likes of Stonehenge or the Celtic tribes who displaced them before Roman times, paid a great deal of attention to the land around them. And as in most of Europe, extremely old Earth-related traditions lingered in Cornwall from Stone Age times.

Extractions: Thanks to our built-in tendency to animate the world in our own image, we have beloved, sacred places everywhere on Earth. Europe has thousands of them, as is well documented. Many old European churches are built upon sites that were holy to far earlier societies. And the countryside is dotted with structures built of large stones, many of them arranged in long-distance lines and oriented toward significant astronomical occurrences like the path of the Moon and particular stars. I focus on Europe here because there's something special about it. As in the rest of the world, the exact reasons for building the structures have been lost. But because a good story is irresistible, in Europe a whole new rootless complex of "Druid" and "new age" mythology has arisen around the monuments.
