Here, Lee et al. show that knocking down Zif268 protein in the amygdala during re-exposure to a cocaine-associated stimulus abolishes the subsequent ability of that stimulus to act as a conditioned reinforcer and thereby support the learning of a new drug-seeking response. Extractions: Lisa Lee Successfully Passed Her Ph.D. Examination Lisa Lee successfully passed her Ph.D. examination on Monday, August 22, 2005, in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. Her thesis title was "Biological implications of Human Melanoma Cell Plasticity". Members of her thesis committee were Mary Hendrix (chair), Paul Heidger, Robert Tomanek, Robert Cornell and David Lubaroff. Lisa's research focused on three principal areas, the first being the cellular plasticity exhibited by highly aggressive melanomas, and the molecular mechanisms underlying their highly invasive behavior. Also explored were the role of aggressive melanoma tumor cells in "vasculogenic mimicry" in tumors; the fate of malignant melanoma cells transplanted into zebrafish embryos; and the potential of the zebrafish as a new model system for studying tumor cell plasticity. This latter work was published in the August 2005 issue of Developmental Dynamics (vol. 233:1560-90)."

We ensure that the CMB program excels in all three of these areas. We are very selective in who becomes a CMB faculty member, only choosing those faculty who have strong research programs and who are committed to mentoring and educating graduate students. And, we are lucky to be able to partake of the Graduate School's excellent first-year Core Curriculum while at the same time allowing you flexibility to pursue your interests with our flexible required courses. We also emphasize an additional critical component, which is faculty-student interaction. With a class size of only 10 to 12 first-year students, this ensures a level of interaction between faculty and students that cannot always be achieved in larger graduate programs. This small class size ensures that students get individual attention from faculty during their first year, even before they join thesis labs.
