Extractions: Source: The Library of Congress Country Studies THE COMMONWEALTH CARIBBEAN is the term applied to the English- speaking islands in the Carribbean and the mainland nations of Belize (formerly British Honduras) and Guyana (formerly British Guiana) that once constituted the Caribbean portion of the British Empire. This volume examines only the islands of the Commonwealth Caribbean, which are Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, the Windward Islands (Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada), Barbados, the Leeward Islands (Antigua and Barbuda, St. Christopher [hereafter, St. Kitts] and Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Montserrat), and the so-called Northern Islands (the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands). To the casual observer, these islands might appear to be too disparate to allow for a common discussion. Consider, for instance, the differences in population, size, income, ethnic composition, and political status among the various islands. Anguilla's 7,000 residents live on an island totaling 91 square kilometers, whereas Jamaica has a population of 2.3 million and a territory of nearly 11,000 square kilometers. The per capita gross domestic product (GDPsee Glossary) of the Cayman Islands is nearly fourteen times as large as that of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Trinidad and Tobago's population is evenly divided between blacks and East Indians, a pattern quite different from that on the other islands, on which blacks constitute an overwhelming majority. Although most of the islands are independent nations, five (the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Montserrat, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands) remain British dependencies.

Extractions: Central America and the Caribbean (detailed pdf map) The Caribbean or the West Indies is a group of countries and islands in the Caribbean Sea . These countries or islands are located from the southeastern areas of Mexico to the northwest of Venezuela in South America . There are at least 7,000 islands, islets reefs , and cayes in the region. They are organized into 25 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies The name "West Indies" originates from Christopher Columbus ' idea that he had landed in the Indies (then meaning all of south and east Asia ) when he had in fact reached the Americas . The name "Caribbean" is named after the Caribs , one of the dominant Amerindian groups in the region at the time of European contact. The Caribbean consists of the Greater and Lesser Antilles , and is often considered part of North America At one time, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of the English-speaking Caribbean islands of the region. The Caribbean area is also famous for its sea pirates . See the article piracy in the Caribbean The region known as "Caribbean" is usually restricted to the islands of the Caribbean Sea, although sometimes the continental American coastline is included.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman make up this British colony. George Town, in Grand Cayman, is the capital, serving mostly as a business center that borders a protected harbor popular with cruise ship passengers pouring in for top-notch duty-free shopping. The National Museum occupies one of the few remaining 19th-century buildings, and chronicles the natural and seafaring history of the Caymans. This is not a party island, and the happiest visitors are those looking for peace and quiet, wishing to exert themselves with little more than water activities and shopping. Resorts and hotels line the cool, white sands of Seven Mile Beach, which is a popular spot where many visitors wind down after a morning of excursions. Originally named Las Tortugas (The Turtles) by Columbus when he sailed past and saw the sea alive with turtles, the Caymans are still rich with marine life, thanks to a mostly undisturbed environment and strict protection laws. Though suburban life and conveniences have settled comfortably into the Grand Caymans, you still find the simple life complete with a rooster that crows the town to life each morning!

The attractive building overlooks Hog Sty Bay, and is one of Cayman's few remaining 19th century structures, a survivor of hurricanes and countless Nor'westers. During its 150 years, it has served as a jail and courthouse - and meeting place of worship. The meticulous restoration project won the 1990 American Express Preservation Award for the Caribbean. The Museum collection contains over 2,000 items, from a 14-ft. traditional hand made catboat to old coins, rare documents and natural history specimens. In 1979 the Cayman Islands Government purchased the late Ira Thompson's private collection of historic memorabilia. This revered Caymanian's hobby spanned almost 50 years and launched the National Museum's original collection.
