Extractions: Review this castle Schonbrunn was supposed to have been the Versailles of the Austrian Empire; but the Hapsburgs were very different from the Kings of France and would never wanted to present themselves to their subjects as gods. Therefore Schronbrunnn was built as both a palace and a summer residence for the numerous families of the rulers. Construction was started at the end of the 17th century, but the history of Schonbrunn had began much earlier than that. It is said that Emperor Mathias II, returning from the hunt one day near the country residence of Katterburg, found a spring of crystal clear water that he called schoner Brunnen (lovely spring). Johann Fischer von Erlach, was commissioned to design the palace and construction began in 1696.The golden age of Schonbrunn began with Maria Teresa of Austria ( 1717-1780) and was only to end with the definite decline of the Hapsburg empire. The empress commissioned court architect Nikolaus von Pacassi with the remaining works, which were completed between 1746 and 1749. he concentrated on the interiors, lightening the original Baroque style with many touches of Rococo. The Great and Small Galleries were completed to be used as receptions and, at Maria Teresa's personal request, a court theater was built as an addition to the original plans. The park too was finally completed and took on the appearance it still has today.

Extractions: It's a lot of fun to think of castles in this way, but in reality they were built for military purposes: for defense, to store arms, to house troops, and to protect a strategic geographical position. Never designed for comfort, they were dark, confined, and unsanitary, especially during times of siege. (One castle in England was surrendered during a siege in 1088 because the stench inside became overpowering.) Usually the owners preferred living in nearby halls built of wood or stone, with plenty of doors for ventilation (windows weren't happening yet).
Extractions: Vienna Vienna's history goes way back to Roman times. Like many cities throughout Europe, it is based on a Roman military settlement called Vindobona. After the decline of the Roman Empire, the remains of this camp developed town under the reign of the Babenberger dynasty. In 1492 it became the seat and capital of the Habsburger's Holy Roman Empire and started growing to the big city it is today. Vienna is not only the political, but also the cultural capital of Austria. It offers a wide variety of theater, music, art and cinemas and the cultural tradition of the high art is well known worldwide. Vienna has been home to many famous musicians, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Hayden, Ludwig van Beethoven and Falco. It is still a very popular stop and living place for artist from around the world.

It is also very photogenic. I am a photographer who delights in the details of the architecture and it's attributes; just look at some of the plate metal doorways and the variable level passageways that they are attached to. A must see! Helmut Payr, 19, from Austria wrote: The Festung Kufstein is incredibly big! There are several sections you can visit! In this time the Festung is going to be restored. There is an elevator in it so you haven't go up the stairs. Since last year you have to pay an entrance fee to go up to the Festung! You have and incredibly good view from there! There is a restaurant where you can eat very fine food. There is a museum where you can travel through the history of Kufstein. All in all the Festung is always worth to be visited. Even though we are just a few kilometers west of Vienna, the Wienerwald retains a peaceful, uncrowded character. The small but beautiful mountains we are cycling through are the eastern terminus of the mighty Alps chain, which stretch through Switzerland, down through France and Italy, and finally disappear into the Mediterranean Sea. In Heiligenkreuz, be sure to check out the Cistercian abbey, perhaps the best example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture in Austria.
