The disillusioned say Its hard to find work; if you do find it, you may not be paid; if you are paid, you'll be sued for negligence. Yet the prospects for the art of landscape design are utterly stupendous. The dust jacket of the Jellicoes Landscape of man rightly proclaims: The world is moving into a phase when landscape design may well be recognised as the most comprehensive of the arts. Man creates around him an environment that is a projection into nature of his abstract ideas. It is only in the present century that the collective landscape has emerged as a social necessity. We are promoting a landscape art on a scale never conceived of in history. So how can we move from the ridiculous to the sublime? I see two requirements: we should be clear in our minds about the nature of the art that we profess and we should open our minds to the many ways in which the art may be practised. In both cases, action must come from within. It is inaccurate and altogether fruitless to lay the blame for our predicament on unimaginative clients, an uncomprehending public or the rapacious practitioners of related professions.

Also included are 35,000 square feet of greenhouses, a 5,000 square-foot retractable roof greenhouse, 7,500 square feet of shade houses; a 10,000-square foot US Golf Association specification experimental green; an extensive field container growing area; and a 4-acre arboretum. The department also has modern, well-equipped laboratories in the Agricultural Sciences Building and at the Units, including labs for biotechnology, landscape industries with CAD, pest management, post harvest technology, and plant materials.
