AUSTRALIAN COALITION AGAINST DEATH PENALTY (ACADP) Organization for the abolition of the death penalty internationally, and preventing the reintroduction of capital punishment in Australia. http://www.angelfire.com/stars/dorina/index.html
Extractions: RESOURCE ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT Australian Coalition Against Death Penalty (ACADP) is an Australian independent non-profit human rights organisation with no political or religious affiliation. ACADP is a united team of dedicated volunteers - a group of university-educated human rights activists from different backgrounds, political and religious beliefs - specialising on the subject of capital punishment - with a determination to work for a death penalty free world. ACADP is the primary source of factual information on every issue surrounding the use of the death penalty around the world. We monitor, research, take action and report the latest death penalty developments globally. ACADP is the Australian voice calling on retentionist nations to establish a moratorium on executions - with a view to completely abolishing capital punishment worldwide. In addition, ACADP is the 'watchtower' organisation that maintains vigilance and takes action against calls for the re-introduction of capital punishment in Australia. ACADP recognises the right of sovereign states to implement their own laws, but at the same time we have genuine concern for precedence of the most fundamental universal human right - the right to life. ACADP opposes the power assumed by governments at any level, to legally kill their criminals. We do not condone the crimes for which individuals are convicted but we insist that no state is ever justified in killing its own citizens.

Spirko's November 15 execution date should be "delayed until the serious issues indicating innocence (are) truly resolved," Duerr noted. In an open letter to Chief Inspector Leroy Heath, Duerr questioned the character of a key state's witness, retired postal inspector Paul Hartman. [ More

Rusty Wright Articles Probe Navigation Home History Current Issues Capital Punishment Capital Punishment PDF E-mail Written by Kerby Anderson Should Christians support the death penalty? The answer to that question is controversial. Many Christians feel that the Bible has spoken to the issue, but others believe that the New Testament ethic of love replaces the Old Testament law. Throughout the Old Testament we find many cases in which God commands the use of capital punishment. We see this first with the acts of God Himself. God was involved, either directly or indirectly, in the taking of life as a punishment for the nation of Israel or for those who threatened or harmed Israel. One example is the flood of Noah in Genesis 6-8. God destroyed all human and animal life except that which was on the ark. Another example is Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 18-19), where God destroyed the two cities because of the heinous sin of the inhabitants. In the time of Moses, God took the lives of the Egyptians' first-born sons (Exod. 11) and destroyed the Egyptian army in the Red Sea (Exod. 14). There were also punishments such as the punishment at Kadesh-Barnea (Num. 13-14) or the rebellion of Korah (Num. 16) against the Jews wandering in the wilderness. The Old Testament is replete with references and examples of God taking life. In a sense, God used capital punishment to deal with Israel's sins and the sins of the nations surrounding Israel.

This fact sheet was originally published on December 1, 2004; this update reflects a March 1, 2005, ruling issued by the U.S. Supreme Court banning the execution of those who were under the age of 18 at the time of their crime. Full text Washington A closely divided Supreme Court ruled March 1 that the death penalty cannot be imposed on youthful murderers who were not yet 18 years of age at the time they committed the crimes, ending a practice used in 19 of the U.S. states. Such executions are a disproportionate punishment for juveniles, whom society views as categorically less culpable than adult criminals, the court said, and violate the ban on cruel and unusual punishment contained in the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Dozens of persons on death rows throughout the country are without counsel. Many more have been appointed attorneys who lack the training, experience or resources to provide effective representation. While each individual has the right to seek post-conviction relief of his conviction and sentence, there is no federal constitutional guarantee that a lawyer be appointed in state proceedings. State post-conviction proceedings are often the first real opportunity for prisoners to establish their innocence or demonstrate constitutional errors that infected the capital trial.
