Extractions: In 1456 Italian navigator LUIGI DA CADAMOSTO, in the service of the king of Portugal, discovered the uninhabited Cape Verde Islands and claimed them in the name of the King of Portugal. In 1462 Portuguese colonists settled; slaves were soon brought in from continental Africa. The original settlers consisted of exiles, convicts, Jews and adventurers; due to the lack of women immigrants from Europe, they took African women, creating a mulatto society. Soon, slaves outnumbered the free settlers (among them a few freed blacks). The Cape Verde islands lacked cultural institutions; the first church was built in 1495, even elementary education was accessible only to a tiny minority. Thus, the Kriolu language emerged, combining elements of Portuguese and of West African languages. The Cape Verde islands became a major station in the Transatlantic slave trade, which supplied Brazil's sugar plantations and gold mines with African slaves. The Portuguese acquired their slaves at ports on the African coast, such as Cacheu and Bissau in PORTUGUESE GUINEA, an area which was administrated from Cape Verde until 1879. Slave trade was formally banned in 1830, a ban not enforced on the islands. Slavery was abolished in 1876. Early on, a textile industry developed on Cape Verde; Verdean cloth was traded on Africa's west coast in exchange for slaves and for other goods. In the 1620es, English fishing vessels began to come to Cape Verde to pick up salt, vital for preserving fish caught in the North Atlantic; salt exports would become a vital part of the Verdean economy until into the late 19th century.

Main article: Human evolution Africa was the birthplace of both the hominin subfamily and the genus Homo , including eight species of which only Homo sapiens remains. According to the latest paleontological and archaeological evidence, hominids were already in existence at least five million years ago. These animals were still very much like their close cousins, the great African apes, but had adopted a bipedal form of locomotion, giving them a crucial advantage in the struggle for survival, as this enabled them to live in both forested areas and on the open savanna , at a time when Africa was drying up, with savannah encroaching on forested areas. By 3 million years ago several australopithecine hominid species had developed throughout southern eastern and central Africa The next major evolutionary step occurred approximately 2 million years ago, with the advent of

A griot may provide the soul of a good wedding party, but he can also be seen as a hustler, and nobody you'd want your daughter to marry. As in other regions of the continent, many a West African star's story begins with the tale of how he or she studied and played music despite parental objections. And frequently, success involved a period of exile. Though Britain and France have long withdrawn from West Africa, their capitals, London and Paris, have provided a vital pathway for musicians in search of an international career. As musicians have moved back and forth, cultural dialogue has continued, and the cities have become important production centers. Meanwhile, West Africa has built up its own studios and production facilities, especially in Lagos, Nigeria, Dakar, Senegal, and Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the region's recording industry capital. Extractions: History The history of Cape Verde is dominated by three overriding facts: there were no people of any sort on the islands when the Portuguese first arrived; the environment has become increasingly fragile over the centuries, largely due to the impact of people and overgrazing; and it's farther from the African mainland and closer to the Americas than any other African country. It's hardly surprising, therefore, that Cape Verde developed along lines somewhat different from the rest of Africa. When Portuguese mariners first landed in Cape Verde in 1456, the islands were barren of people but not of vegetation. Seeing the islands today, you find it hard to imagine that they were once sufficiently verde (green) to entice the Portuguese to return six years later to the island of S£o Tiago to found Ribeira Grande (now Cidade Velha). The Portuguese soon brought slaves from the West African coast to do the hard labour. The islands also became a convenient base for ships transporting slaves to Europe and the Americas. The islands' prosperity brought them unwanted attention in the form of a sacking at the hands of England's Sir Francis Drake in 1586. Cape Verde remained in Portuguese hands and continued to prosper, but in 1747 the islands were hit with the first of the many droughts that have plagued them ever since. The situation was made worse by deforestation and overgrazing, which destroyed the ground vegetation that provided moisture. Three major droughts in the 18th and 19th centuries resulted in well over 100,000 people starving to death. The Portuguese government sent almost no relief during any of the droughts. The 19th-century decline of the lucrative slave trade was another blow to the country's economy. Cape Verde's colonial heyday was over.

Extractions: Patrick Chabals new edited volume, A History of Postcolonial Lusophone Africa , seeks to provide an extensive review of postcolonial Portuguese-speaking Africa. In many respects, this new book compliments Chabals earlier edited work entitled The Postcolonial Literature of Lusophone Africa . However, I would argue that Chabals latest book is far more ambitious than the latter, in that it seeks to outline and synthesize the political and socio-economic history of postcolonial Lusophone Africa into one single text. In order to bring a sense of organization to such a large text A History of Postcolonial Lusophone Africa is divided into two parts. The first part written by Chabal himself is entitled Lusophone Africa in Historical and Comparative Perspective.
