Extractions: From Simon Barnes in Sydney At the very last it was England against Germany and, of course, it came down to penalties. So naturally, you already know who came second: Paul Ratcliffe, Britains Great Whitewater Hope, performed a wild high-risk skedaddle down the great sluicing hill of water, and had to settle for silver in the mens kayak singles slalom. He did so with more disappointment than delight. He knew that a gold was in his grasp. He knew that it was taken from him by the Great Olympic Twitch. As well as picking up the penalties, he had a spectacular capsize at the end of his first run, and only just managed to rescue himself from disaster and disqualification. He righted himself just a half-second before crossing the line; had he failed to do so, he would have been disqualified. As it was, it was a time-consuming manoeuvre, since you cant really paddle your fastest upside down, even in Australia. "Its never happened to me before," he said. The fact that it happened here was not a matter of chance - just a classic example of the Great Olympic Twitch. It is highly to his credit that he recovered from this blow to take the silver.

Extractions: The two boats used in international canoeing competitions both played an important role in Canadian history. The canoe and kayak, developed by native Canadians, were adopted by European immigrants for travel and trade in wilderness areas. With the coming of railroads, their importance as vehicles of transportation decreased and they began to be used primarily for sport and recreation. Racing canoes and kayaks, which come in different lengths to accommodate different numbers of paddlers, are lighter and more streamlined than their recreational counterparts. The racing canoe is called the "Canadian" to honour it Canadian heritage. Canadian events are contested by individuals (C-1) or pairs (C-2). Kayaking events are contested by individuals (K-1), pairs (K-2) or teams of four (K-4). Flatwater races are held on a course divided into nine lanes. Finalists are determined through a series of elimination rounds. Paddlers in the Canadian events kneel on one knee and use a single-bladed paddle. Kayakers are seated and use a double-bladed paddle. In the slalom events, racers negotiate a series of gates set in fast-moving water, including a number of upstream gates. Time faults of 50 seconds for miseed gates or five seconds for touching a gate are added to the elapsed time to determine a competitor's final time. Slalom events consist of two runs, with the fastest run being used to derermine the final standings.
