Extractions: Table of Contents The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

Extractions: Reference Desk Canoe/Kayak First Olympic Appearance: 1924 by Gerry Brown First of all, there are some basic differences between canoes and kayaks. The canoe paddler kneels to paddle while the kayaker paddles sitting down. Also, a canoe paddle has a flat blade on only one end of the paddle shaft while the kayak paddle is equipped with a curved blade on each end. When you watch the Games also notice that the slalom canoes, unlike regular canoes, are decked, meaning there is a spray skirt that keeps water out of the boat. Also, the slalom canoes and kayaks are shorter and wider than their sprint counterparts in order to be more maneuverable. There are two distinct disciplines in the canoe/kayak competitions: slalom and sprint. The dramatic slalom competitions are held on whitewater while sprints are races on flat water. The slalom didn't make its Olympic debut until in Munich, and because of the costs associated with building the courses, didn't return until Barcelona in

Rules The âgatesâ are placed specifically in locations so the competitor passes them downstream, (green gates), or upstream - against the current - (red gates, of which there must be at least six in the course). A competitor receives a two-point penalty for touching a gate during the race and a fifty-point penalty for missing a gate. Penalty points are added to the final time. (For example: a competitor finishes in a time of 2:20:82.  Each second counts for one point., making 2:20:82 minutes a total of 140.82 points. However, during  the race the competitor touched a gate once and missed another one. Two further points are added for touching one gate and an additional fifty points for failing to go through a gate, bringing the total up to 192.82 points). The winner is the competitor with the least amount of points. In the slalom race there are heats (two runs), semi-finals (one run) and finals (one run). Every competitor / crew races on his / her own boat down the course, the opponent being the clock and the gates to be passed. Depending on the number of participating athletes, competitors usually start at one-minute intervals in the heats and up to two-and-a-half minute intervals in the finals.
Extractions: The United States two-man kayak team of Angel Perez, left, and Peter Newton finished in sixth place. AP PENRITH, Australia (CNNSI.com) - Angel Perez and Peter Newton teamed to finish sixth in the men's two-man, 500-meter kayak event on Sunday. Perez and Newton were delayed by six hours prior to the finals due to high winds, and even though the U.S. pair did not medal, it was the best U.S. performance in the event. It's the second time in as many days that Perez and Newton were part of a American-best boat. The K-4 was sixth on Saturday (Friday night EDT), the first time the United States has reached that final. "It was a wonderful experience," said Perez, who competed for his native Cuba in 1992. "I hope to do it again at the next Olympics."
