Extractions: KAYAK MEDAL MAKES HISTORY Brabants: silver medal hope. Picture: Juda Ngwenya/Reuters TIM BRABANTS, Britain's first ever Olympic sprint canoeing medallist, retains a slim hope of having his bronze upgraded to a silver. Brabants, a 23-year-old medical student from Walton-on-Thames, finished third in the men's K1 1000 metres in Sydney. But Petar Merkov, the Bulgarian who finished second, is involved in a drugs controversy which could yet see him disqualified. Reports in Bulgaria have alleged that Merkov tested positive for a banned diuretic - used as a masking agent for steroids - a fortnight ago. The International Canoe Federation (ICF), the sport's governing body, have so far been unable to get hold of the test results, so Merkov's Olympic placing stands. But Great Britain's Alan Williams is one of 15 national team managers who have written to the ICF asking for the situation to be clarified. Williams said: "Prior to the competition we heard of these test results and wanted to know the ICF's position. They told us the tests had taken place in a Bulgaria and they had not been able to make contact with the laboratory yet. "That remains the case. Even if they do see the results, whether or not the test results will be officially recognised by the ICF is not clear because it wasn't a ICF test. But the whole thing seems very dubious."

The earliest canoes were constructed from animal skins and tree bark, with modern designs the descendants of those used by North American indigenous cultures. "Kayak" is the Canadian Inuit word for a sealskin-decked canoe, while "canoe" comes from the Canadian Indian birch-bark vessel. Today's sport is a product of 19th century Britain, with Scottish barrister John MacGregor introducing the modern decked kayak to London's River Thames in the late 1850s and early 1860s. McGregor founded the Royal Canoe Club in 1866 and the first competitions were held in the same year. In North America, the more durable open canoe was more popular and by the 1890s virtually replaced the decked canoe for both single-blade and double-blade paddling.

The origins of the sport of Canoeing can be traced as far back as five thousand years ago, in prehistoric times, when people crossed rivers and lakes in boats. Todayâs kayak is a descendant of the Eskimo sealskin kayak. The canoe comes from the Canadian Indian birch-bark canoe. Impetus was given to the sport by a British lawyer, John MacGregor, in the second half of the nineteenth century. After studying the construction of ancient kayaks, he constructed a similar craft for use on European rivers and lakes. In 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club; the first competitions were held in the same year. Competitive Canoe/kayak flatwater racing is a relatively new sport. The International Canoe Federation (ICF), founded in 1924, is the sportâs highest authority internationally. The year 1924 also saw the addition of Canoe/kayak flatwater racing to the Summer Olympics programme. It was incorporated as a display event in the Paris Games, with competitors from America and Canada. The menâs Canoe / Kayak flatwater racing disciplines were first included in the Olympic Games competition schedule in 1936 in Berlin, while the womenâs disciplines were included in 1948 in London. The first European Championship took place in 1933 at Prague.Â

Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search Table of Contents The canoe is one of the oldest forms of transportation, probably second only to the raft. Dugout canoes were being manufactured at least 8,000 years ago. But lighter, more maneuverable canoes were developed much more recently in North America by covering a frame with animal skins, fabric, or bark. The birchbark canoe used by Native Americans was adopted by French explorers and fur traders during the 17th century. Despite its frail appearance, it's a very strong, durable craft. Its shallow draft will carry through whitewater rapids that would demolish most boats, and it can be easily portaged around totally impassable rapids or across stretches of land from one body of water to another. The Eskimo kayak, which has a partly enclosed deck with openings for the paddlers' seats, was discovered by Europeans somewhat later. While the canoeist uses a single-bladed paddle that's similar to the oar used in rowing, the kayak paddle has a blade on each end and is gripped in the middle. A Scottish lawyer, John MacGregor, was chiefly responsible for establishing canoeing as a recreational sport. In 1845, he designed a type of canoe, the Rob Roy, which had a deck and was equipped with a mast and sail as well as paddles. MacGregor went on a whole series of cruises in Europe and the Holy Land beginning in 1849, and he wrote books and delivered many lectures about his trips.
