Providence education is based on an evangelical statement of faith that affirms the infallible authority of the scriptures in everything they teach. Providence is an interdenominational school governed by a Board of Directors, elected from the Corporation which represents the supporters of the School. The College and Seminary student body includes a diversity of denominations; Pentecostal, Baptist, Mennonite and Evangelical Free are among the majority. Over the years Providence has distinguished itself with alumni who had a significant influence in the evangelical movement in Western Canada and beyond. These include Henry Hildebrand, founder of Briercrest Family of Schools, Erwin Lutzer, Senior Pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago, and Andrew Karsgaard, medical missionary with The Evangelical Alliance Mission and founder of a hospital in Pakistan. The College currently has a full time equivalent of about 400 students, and the Seminary a full time equivalent of almost 200 students. The Liberal government of Prime Minister Paul Martin lost its majority, but was able to form a minority government after the elections. The main opposition party, the newly amalgamated Conservative Party of Canada , improved its position but with a showing far below its expectations. On May 23 Governor General Adrienne Clarkson , on the advice of Martin, ordered the dissolution of the House of Commons. Following a 36-day campaign, voters elected 308 Members of the House of Commons.

The fur-trade pressed westward by the St. Lawrence with its tributaries and the Great lakes; the fishing industry, the fur-trade, and the lumbering industry depended upon water transport. Only since 1850 have wheat-raising, mining, and pulp and paper become important. industries dependent upon rail transport. The French Period After the discovery by the French of a vast supply of furs, the spread of the fashion for beaver hats, and the demands of the Indians for iron and gunpowder, the fur-trade pushed up the valley of the St. Lawrence, where there was freedom from attack by other European countries and safety for monopoly control. The great forested Precambrian shield gave an abundance of beaver skins which were brought down by the rivers first the Saguenay, and later the St. Maurice and the Ottawa
