Extractions: Tue Nov 23 11:44:28 EST 2004 Good morning, Backmed: I tried to send this message last week, but our e-mail system was behaving VERY strangely, as some of you can attest if you have tried to contact me recently. I did not see this message among the Backmed stuff that came to me, so I assume that for some reason it did not "take." If it is a duplicate and you have seen this already, I apologize. Information Systems has reworked our whole e-mail system. Please note the resulting change to my e-mail address. Now I get to sit here and try to remember how many places I've signed onto using my e-mail address - the old address will not work after the end of January. [Sigh] Isn't technology wonderful? Extractions: Gene Expression Front Page February 27, 2003 Ikram Saeed asks: I would agree that China is less diverse than India, but it is still extremely diverse. And south China is the most distinct region of all, with several unintelligible "chinese" languages. Are Chinese emigrants disproportionately from the south? US and Canadian Chinese populations arise largely from southern China. The only country I know of which has Chinese residents originating from many parts of China is Taiwan. But this is blog is best when it is quantitive. What is the genetic similarity between northern, southern, and inland residents of China? Compare with India? On north Chinese vs. south Chinese, Ikram is of course correct that the "dialects" of the south are languages by another name (while the "languages" of Scandanavia are dialects by another name). But , for the lay person, Ikram forgets to mention that all Chinese (Han, Zhongguo-Ren, Huaren, whatever) share a common written language, ergo As for the genetics, this is a complex question (speaking of complex, some ). Extractions: Thanks Randy Johnson A perfect 40. Thank you, Randy Johnson. The Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher became the oldest major leaguer to throw a perfect game recently. It doesn't get better than that in baseball. Twenty-seven batters up and 27 batters down. Only 15 other pitchers have done that since 1880. And none of them as old as Johnson. The next oldest was Cy Young, the guy they named baseball's best pitcher award after. He was 37 and change when he tossed his perfect game in 1904. A Canadian champ The spring marathon season is rapidly wrapping up. This weekend, Canada will crown its marathon champ for 2004 at the National Capital Race weekend in Ottawa. It's the country's biggest marathon and, this year, the official Canadian championship race. In the days before the meet, more than 19,000 people had signed up for the various races.
