Extractions: Download PDF Version of this document Introduction It has become fashionable to blame Canadas allegedly poor productivity performance for many of the ills that have afflicted our economy in the 1990s. Everything from the stagnation in our living standards, to the drop in value of the Canadian dollar and to our lagging stock markets have been ascribed to our purported inability to match other countries advances in productivity. This view has taken particular currency since such prominent organizations as the OECD have rung alarm bells and issued warnings about our relative living standards if current productivity trends were not substantially improved. However, statistics released over the past several months have challenged this view and sparked a debate. These statistics contradict the notion that Canada has lagged the US, our chief trading partner, in productivity growth. In fact, they actually show that our performance has been quite respectable at the most aggregate level, even in the 1990s.
