Alberta Hemp Symposia Proceedings From the canadian Department of Agriculture. Procedings of a 1998 symposium on the history, cultivation, processing, characteristics and applications of hemp fiber. http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/opp551
Extractions: The Low-THC hemp symposium has been organized by the Special Crops Product Team. It represents a cross-section of specialists across the department and members from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The Team is a liaison between industry and the department. Mission of the Team is " To lead departmental activities in Special Crops, consistent with industry objectives, in response to diversification, value-added and market place opportunities". The Hemp Symposium Committee, headed by Dr. Stan Blade has put in a lot of time and efforts to bring to you a group of resource people (experts) who are going to share their hands-on expertise on this so-called wonder crop, the hemp. It has been claimed as a wonder crop because the plant uses can range from 251 to 20,000. Pockets of industrial hemp production still exist in Europe, Central Asia, and the Far East. Cotton, jute and synthetic fibers had replaced hemp in the textile industry in late thirties. Wood pulp pushed it out of paper manufacturing. Outlawing hemp production in many countries added to its decline. Our government outlawed hemp production in 1938. However, the ban was lifted during the Second World War to enable production of badly needed items such as twine, rope, fire hoses and parachute webbing.
