It is the region formed by the interaction of the North Pacific Ocean and North American Continent both in terms of climate and the geological results of plate tectonics. S cottish explorer David Douglas named the Cascades for the great waterfalls made by the Columbia River as it roars through the Columbia Gorge. The Cascades later became the name for the mountain range that makes the north-coastal rainforest possible as it precipitates the warm Pacific moisture-laden air as rain and snow. When the drainage basins of this area are included, Cascadia extends eastward beyond the Cascade range to the headwaters of the rivers that flow through it from the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains. C ascadia includes the northcoast watersheds from the Redwood forests in Northern California to the Sitka spruce valleys of the Alaska panhandle and is the home of the massive fir trees that are named after David Douglas. Because of the domination of the Columbia River watershed on the north coast landscape, the name "Columbiana" is also used for describing the vast drainage basin of Columbia, Snake and Kootenay rivers.

Visitors to Arcata frequently feel as if they had entered a time warp and emerged in the 50's era of civil rights direct action. This college town is home to Humboldt State University, which accounts for approximately half of its residents. Arcata, which is adjacent to Humboldt Bay on the "redwood coast," is a bastion of liberal thought in otherwise conservative lumber country and is sometimes derided by outlying Humboldt residents as "The People's Republic of Arcata." It is the first city in the United States to elect a majority of its city council members from the Green Party. Established during the timber boom generated by the 19th centrury Gold Rush, Arcata features a large number of original Victorian structures, many of which have been lovingly restored. For its size, the city has many bookstores, coffeehouses, restaurants, galleries and music venues. It is also home to the beloved Humboldt Crabs of semi-pro baseball fame, who frequently play before sold-out crowds (of c. 1500) each summer. In order to preserve its community character, laws in Arcata limit the number of chain businesses allowed in the city. Residents hotly debate major issues, including protection of the physical environment, the domination of America by corporate culture, and legalization of marijuana. Arcata was the first city in the nation to pass a law purporting to nullify the USA PATRIOT Act in that city. The legality of this has not yet been tested.

    Extractions: Fillmore is located in Southern California, northwest of Los Angeles. It is located in the Santa Clara River Valley, just north of the river along Highway 126. Highway 126 connects Fillmore to Ventura and Highway 101 in the west and Santa Clarita and Interstate 5 in the east. Highway 101 and Interstate 5 are each approximately twenty miles from Fillmore. To the north of the town lie the mountains of Los Padres National Forest. Mexican explorer Don Gaspar de Portola was sent in 1769 to explore Alta (Upper) California. On August 8 of that year, he and his contingent camped in the Santa Clara Valley near the site of present-day Fillmore. He met several groups of Native Americans who lived in the valley. Under Mexican rule, the area became part of the Rancho Sespe Mexican land grant. A mini gold rush occurred along the river in 1842 (several years before Northern California's gold rush). In 1848 the region became part of the United States and explorer John C. Fremont mapped the valley, which was densely covered with wild mustard. As part of the expansion of the western railroad network, the Southern Pacific Railroad built its coastal line through the Santa Clara Valley in 1886 and 1887. In 1887 an old boxcar was utilized as the town's first train station. The town was named after J.P. Fillmore, the railroad's superintendent, and a town plot map was filed with Ventura County in 1888.

This site is the end result of my project for Geography 672, a graduate seminar in geography at California State University, Northridge In this course, taught by Dr. William Bowen , we focused on roads and the buildings which lie along side them. I decided to photograph and describe Central Avenue in Fillmore, California. This is what Fillmore looked like in May 1998. This site will not be updated because it is a snapshot in time. Fillmore appealed to me with its small town atmosphere and mix of old, renovated, and new buildings. Fillmore is a great representation of an early California town. The commercial district of the town began on Main Street, across from the train station. It expanded onto Central Avenue in the late 1910s. This site includes photographs and short descriptions of every building on Central Avenue. Central Avenue, and most of downtown Fillmore, has some unique features that you'll want to be watching for as you virtually stroll downtown. First, the palm trees. The palm trees are classic symbols of Southern California and are used to line Central Avenue and Central Park at

The broadcasts of history, power, and contestations inhabiting our built environments are heard by listening closely and critically. With advances in technology and human psychology, the deployment of sound in the public arena increasingly produces space and modulates our own subjectivities. Some voices and presences are becoming amplified, while others are increasingly muted. My interest in geography comes from my work as an artist, were I have found theories of space supplied my geographers far more productive for my own practice than theories of aesthetics supplied by art historians. I insist on treating geography as an art form, and treating art as an experimental form of geography.
