Health Care To Native Americans: Indian School Hospitals Souvenir album of a california offreservation Indian school. This one from New Mexico mentions health of Albuquerque boarding School Students and http://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/if_you_knew/if_you_knew_05.html
Extractions: Office of Indian Affairs (c.1883-c.1916) Off-reservation boarding schools were considered by many government and boarding school officials to be major successes in forcing Native American children to adopt the ways of white "civilization" and simultaneously to abandon their own Native traditions. Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was a school of this type, as was Sherman Institute in Riverside, California. Native children were originally brought to Carlisle as hostages to insure that their parents would not continue armed resistance against the United States Army. However, many of the first Carlisle students became ill from diseases, such as tuberculosis, and died in the school's opening years. This may be a reason for Carlisle President Richard H. Pratt's letter to a physician in 1884, requesting help in selecting "healthy children" for the school from Indian reservations in the West. This letter is displayed here. In addition to providing medical treatment to its students, Carlisle Indian School Hospital also functioned as a preliminary nurse training facility, preparing Native American women to move on to regular nursing schools, as the souvenir album here shows. Extractions: Los Angeles, California The answer to the question, why boarding school is, in a nutshell, the village. My son Quincy is one of those kids who likes to do it all. Hes a combination academic, jock, and artist with an emphasis on architecture. When youre fourteen, having to choose doesnt seem like much of a choice at all. One day, he got in the car, obviously frustrated, and said, Dad, theres got to be a school where I dont have to choose. Its not that strange to want to do more than one thing. And thats when he first suggested the idea of boarding school. Did I miss Quincy when he went off to Hotchkiss? Sure, terribly. But something interesting happened. Like most teenagers Quincy used to give me one-word answers to my questions. Hows math? Fine. Hows chemistry? Fine. At the first Hotchkiss parent meeting, a faculty member said, You are used to your children getting As, but at Hotchkiss theyre not going to get As immediately. Dont fix it. I took that to heart. With me no longer saying things like, maybe if you studied a little harder for that test, instead of one-word answers, I got, Dad, I wrote this paper. It was about so and so and I found out such and such. Twenty minutes later, hes still telling me about it. When we talk, and we do often, its meaningful talk. My son hasnt gone away; we are closer than ever.

Extractions: (Published June 30, 1997) Martin Waukazoo had his first drunk at age 7 on the squalid Rosebud Sioux reservation in South Dakota, about the time he first saw the signs in Rapid City that said "No Dogs or Indians Allowed." At 16, he went on a bender that lasted 13 years. "I was ashamed to be an Indian," he said. "If we'd stayed in Rosebud, I probably would have died of alcoholism." Waukazoo means "lights in the distance," and at 24, he joined tens of thousands of Indians who came to California's cities between 1952 and 1981 in hope of a better future. Waukazoo found himself part of the largest mass movement of Indians in American history, the government's program to get Indians off reservations and into the mainstream.
Extractions: May 1996 PREFACE The inspiration for this Special Issue grew out of a meeting of consultants to the Heard Museum. Karen Swisher (Haskell Indian Nations University), Rayna Green (Smithsonian Institution), Tsianina Lomawaima (University of Arizona), and Brenda Child (University of Minnesota), were invited in 1995 by Curator of Fine Art Margaret Archuleta, under the auspices of a National Endowment for the Humanities Planning Grant, to help plan an exhibit on American Indians' boarding school experiences tentatively titled "Our Indian Schools" (scheduled to open at the Heard in the spring of 1999). We hope that this Special Issue will help stimulate continuing research, dialogue, and debate about American Indian people's experiences in, and opinions about, boarding school. It is clear that there is much that remains to be done. Large off-reservation schools, such as Sherman Institute in Riverside, CA, as well as many smaller schools, on and off reservations, remain undocumented. Most of the research to date has focused on the schools prior to World War II. The more contemporary era from the War to the present is wide open, inviting those with the interest and the commitment to help document, preserve, and understand the educational experiences of American Indian people. We are looking forward to what the future will bring. K. Tsianina Lomawaima, Guest Editor
News From Native California: "You First Must Live Earthly..." News from Native california An Inside View of the california Indian World. The boarding School Experience from a Healers Perspective http://heydaybooks.com/news/issues/articles/14.1.billwright.html
Extractions: by Jacquelyn Ross Bill began by describing the physical and mental abuse that he witnessed and experienced in boarding school. Growing up as a young kid, so as with Indian people a long time ago, when Indians lived before the Europeans came, they had medicine people. They also knew who was special. They knew that a kid was going to be special but they treated him just like any other kid, only a medicine person would maybe doctor him, or he will not touch the rest of his brothers or sisters. So, we just grew up with it. Nobody asked questions. So we grew up and only the old people knew. Then when I got older, my uncle told me. And I said, "Me? Not me!" Because I grew up earthly. You have to have two parts, and one part of my life is living earthly - these are all material things. How I looked at life before I did anything spiritual, you see. You first must live earthly but you see, I didnt know I was going to become a spiritual doctor. I had no idea. I lived like everybody else. Due to some family difficulties when Bill was just a young boy, he and his brothers and sisters were made wards of the court and sent to Stewart Indian School in Nevada. He recalls with striking immediacy the treatment he endured.

Extractions: By Carla Rivera An apartment complex in Montclair housed students at the military- style academy, which is accused of abuse. Police in Montclair removed more than two dozen youths from a private military-style boarding school Tuesday, after a former employee and several former residents accused operators of administering abusive punishment. In an early morning raid, 26 youths were taken from an apartment complex used as a residence by the Ministerial Christian Academy. Investigators with search warrants confiscated handcuffs, shackles, computers, financial records and other documents, police said. Ricky Leslie, 39, of Montclair, described by police as a caretaker at the residence, was arrested on suspicion of rape with a foreign object and sexual battery of a female student. Police said Leslie is a registered sex offender. Police were led to the two-story apartment complex on a quiet street by accusations that youngsters had been restrained in handcuffs, left for hours in cramped, darkened storage rooms and forced into a cold swimming pool as punishments. The owners of the academy, Otis McIntyre, 47, and Doris McIntyre, 61, of
