Essay An essay by Jonathan Detwiler, a sophomore civil engineering student at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. http://www.worldofjd.homestead.com/Essay.html
Extractions: An alternative argument presented against hunting is based on the way some hunters do things. Some concerns are how some hunters trespass, litter, dispose of killed animals inappropriately, and how hunters behave in public. The land available to hunters has been decreasing for just those reasons. Land owners feel like they can't trust the hunters. They are concerned hunters will leave gates open, destruct property, poach, and be unsafe. Anti-hunting people will also point out things hunters do in public. Among those things are, sticking bloody deer on top of vans, leaving the tailgate down so that everyone can see the deer, and even the image that most hunters are dumb rednecks. The concerned people just feel that people who hunt tend to be jerks and they don't won't to have bums out handling guns and killing things. The final major argument against hunting and the most popular is that hunting is just too dangerous. This argument is inspired by the many stories the media presents about hunting accidents. One example of a gun accident comes from Oregon. Ironically, the example involves two brothers that survived the Oregon High School shooting in 1998. Richard Peek Junior, 19, who had is arm shot in the school shootings was hunting with his 17 year old brother Robert. Thinking they heard a deer the boys ed their guns and knelt down. Then, either by his hand slipping on the hammer or his gun getting caught on his clothes, Robert's gun went off. The bullet went directly through his brothers head killing him instantly. Terrible stories like that provoke thought. Many view hunting as just to dangerous. They don't believe people are just not responsible enough to hunt safely.
Computer Hacking And Ethics Paper about developing ethics in teenage hackers. http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~bh/hackers.html
Extractions: University of California, Berkeley [A slightly different version of this paper was written for the ``Panel on Hacking'' held by the Association for Computing Machinery in April, 1985. Thanks to Batya Friedman, Donn Parker, and Carter Sanders for their comments on early drafts.] [Neal Patrick] said he and his friends, who named themselves the ``414s'' after the Milwaukee area code, did not intend to do any damage and did not realize they were doing anything unethical or illegal. In fact, when asked [at a Congressional subcommittee hearing] at what point he questioned the ethics of his actions, he answered, ``Once the FBI knocked on the door.'' It's no secret that a mature sense of ethics is something a person develops over time. Parents are supposed to exercise authority over their children because the children are not expected to know how to make certain decisions for themselves. We have a juvenile court system separate from the adult criminal court system because we believe that a young person is not capable of criminal intent in the same sense that an adult is capable of it.
Extractions: Last week a panel appointed by the influential Institute of Medicine issued a report recommending that all pregnant women be tested for the AIDS virus as part of routine prenatal care. There are important reasons to undertake the first widespread HIV screening of a part of the population. Most important, testing during pregnancy allows for early drug treatment that can substantially reduce the risk of passing the infection from mother to child, and offers women the best chance to fight their own infection. But the panel also came to more worrisome conclusions in order to implement across-the-board testing of all pregnant women two recommendations with ethical implications. First: members suggested that pre-test counseling requirements could and should be relaxed, and second: that unless women specifically objected they should be tested for HIV.

European Codes Of Journalism Ethics / Europe Guide to ethics codes for media in European countries with related articles and links to selected press councils. http://www.uta.fi/ethicnet/
Extractions: Codes of Journalism Ethics Welcome to EthicNet! EthicNet is a project which aims at a comprehensive databank offering basic information on media ethics for journalism students and teachers as well as scholars and practitioners. We believe that this kind of open service on Internet may contribute to raising the standards of journalistic performance. EthicNet is a collection of codes of journalism ethics from most of the European countries, translated into English. The core of the collection resulted from numerous research projects of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Tampere, and it has been extended and updated with information from various relevant sources. The contents of EthicNet are inevitably incomplete, and we welcome all proposals for its improvement! We would be especially delighted to receive additional codes for this collection. Efficient updating of EthicNet naturally requires continuous funding - something that cannot guaranteed at present. EthicNet is therefore a call for all interested parties to contact us for further discussion about working together. EthicNet is maintained by the Journalism Research and Development Centre at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Tampere, Finland. The database is supervised by Prof. Kaarle Nordenstreng and Dr. Ari Heinonen.
Journal Of Buddhist Ethics An online academic electronic journal devoted to theoretical and applied issues in Buddhist ethics. http://jbe.la.psu.edu/
Extractions: New York: Basil Blackwell, 1985, pp. 1-10 Acrobat version This book [ In Defense of Animals Although there were one or two nineteenth-century thinkers who asserted that animals have rights, the serious political movement for animal liberation is very young, a product of the 1970s. Its aims are quite distinct from the efforts of the more traditional organizations, like the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, to stop people from treating animals cruelly. Even these traditional concerns, however, are relatively recent when seen in the context of 3,000 years of Western civilization, as a brief glance at the historical background to the contemporary animal liberation movement will show. Concern for animal suffering can be found in Hindu thought, and the Buddhist idea of compassion is a universal one, extending to animals as well as humans, but our Western traditions are very different. Our intellectual roots lie in Ancient Greece and in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Neither is kind to those not of our species. In the conflict between rival schools of thought in Ancient Greece, it was the school of Aristotle that eventually became dominant. Aristotle held the view that nature is a hierarchy in which those with less reasoning ability exist for the sake of those with more reasoning ability. Thus plants, he said, exist for the sake of animals, and animals for the sake of man, to provide him with food and clothing. Indeed, Aristotle took his logic a step further- the barbarian tribes, which he considered obviously less rational than the Greeks, existed in order to serve as slaves to the more rational Greeks. He did not quite have the nerve to add that philosophers, being supremely rational, should be served by everyone else!

Feminist Ethics By Rosemarie Tong, Davidson College. http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/feminism-ethics/
Extractions: Please Read How You Can Help Keep the Encyclopedia Free Feminist Ethics Feminists have developed a wide variety of women-centered approaches to ethics, including those labeled "feminine," "maternal," and "lesbian." Each of these approaches to ethics highlights the differences between men's and women's respective situations in life- biological and social; provides strategies for dealing with issues that arise in private as well as public life; and offers action guides intended to undermine rather than bolster the present systematic subordination of women (Jaggar, "Feminist Ethics," 1992). Considered together the overall aim of all feminist approaches to ethics, irrespective of their specific labels, is to create a gender-equal ethics, a moral theory that generates non-sexist moral principles, policies, and practices. 1.
