Extractions: The son of a colonel, Burton was born in Torquay and had an irregular education - in France and Italy and at Oxford, from which he was expelled. From 1842, he served for seven years in the Indian Army, first in Sind (now in south-east Pakistan) under Sir Charles Napier. In 1853, he made a pilgrimage to Mecca, disguised in Afghani dress, becoming one of the first Europeans to visit the holy Muslim city. He later also 'discovered' the sacred city of Harar in Ethiopia and, in 1855, led a foray into Somalia, accompanied by Speke. Just before he left England for his search for the source of the Nile, he became engaged to Isabel Arundell, who as his wife would be his greatest defender. At the age of 36, at the time of the expedition with Speke, Burton was one of the great minds and most remarkable personalities of the Victorian era - an author, explorer, scientist and poet. A brilliant linguist, he mastered over 30 languages, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Hindi and Swahili. He wrote 43 books, translated the Arabian Nights, The Perfumed Garden
Extractions: Miskatonic University Press wtd@pobox.com Burton and Gordon Fictional Footnotes FRBR Blog ... Twists, Slugs and Roscoes Updated 26 July 2005 with quotes from Burton that show they did meet! Did Richard Burton and "Chinese" Gordon ever meet? I went through biographies of both men, and it appeared that they corresponded for nine years but never met in person. Gordon and Isabel Burton (with whom he also exchanged letters for years) met twice, once in Suez in April 1878 and again in London in April 1880. Finally, in a review of Gordon's Khartoum journals that Burton wrote after Gordon's death, I found certain proof they had met: Burton said so. "We did not meet until 1879 at Cairo, and I was astonished to find how unlike were all his portraits." Whether they met after that, I do not know. What is below pieces together everything I've found that connects the two men. Not much of their correspondence has been published. All the biographies quote letters from The Romance of Isabel Lady Burton , and Lovell also briefly quotes a couple of letters in Isabel's papers at the Wiltshire Country Records Office that were only recently discovered. I typed in all the letters I could find, and then, since that didn't make a clear picture, added what I could find about the relationship between the Burtons and Gordon. Burton and Gordon were two of the most fascinating men of the Victorian age, and Lady Burton was herself remarkable.

It takes the form of a curved wall made of grey-green granite quarried in Western Australia. On it are carved 24,000 place names from which servicemen and women came who fought alongside Britain in the two world wars. Letters from these make up larger names of battle sites and there is a constant flow of water over the stones. An inscription reads 'Whatever burden you are to carry we also will shoulder that burden'. The reader may object to her religious views, he may smile at her weaknesses, he may lament her indiscretions, but he will recognise that at bottom she was a God-fearing, noble-minded woman; and he will, we think, find himself really in love with her almost before knowing it. Other descriptions of Travel literature Travel literature is a record of the events, sights and personal feelings which a traveller experiences as they go from place to place. In some cases, it is the result of a prolonged stay in one city or area. An individual work is sometimes called a travelogue or itinerary Travel is the transport of people on a trip or journey. ... The format of these travelogues can be at its simplest a diary listing events day by day. More usually, travelogues are combined into a more coherent narrative resembling a story, and possibly even mixing fiction and reality. The style of individual travelogues varies as much as the reasons for travelling do. They can be just a simple description of what was seen, an investigation into the reason behind these new sights or even an investigation into the authors' own beliefs and motivations for travel (e.g. Laurence Sterne 's "A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy" A diary is a book for writing discrete entries arranged by date. ...
