Extractions: In the years before the First World War, the daily papers used few news photographs; the technology had not been developed to the point where photos could be used on short notice in any significant number. At the same time, however, the postcard photographer could have his news photographs on the street the day after an event took place. George Alfred Barrowclough was one of these photographers.

Extractions: This is the tale of how Canadas high northern wilderness was brought into civilizations fold through a frail network of wires laboriously strung between poles and trees for hundreds of desolate miles. It started in 1897, when gold was discovered in the Yukon and the government needed a faster way to communicate with its remote northern territory. The isolated residents, too, wanted a more reliable connection with the outside world. Thus was born the Yukon Telegraph.
Extractions: BBC is consistently acknowledged by audiences, critics and the artistic community, as an innovative, creative and risk-taking dance company. Of the works in the repertoire, twelve were created by John Alleyne; and twenty-four were created by Canadian choreographers (including John Alleyne). This dedication to presenting new works as often as possible clearly reinforces the company's mandate for creating and presenting superior contemporary dance.

The Fort Langley Historical Site THE BEGINNING Historically the functional Fort Langley had a relatively short life. From beginning to end it lasted some 60 years. The original structure was built by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1827. Due to circumstances resulting from an agreement with the Russian American (Fur) Company more emphasis was placed on the farming operation and the Fort was rebuilt 4 kilometers upstream (east) in 1839. Shortly thereafter it burned down and was rebuilt again in 1840. PERIOD OF GROWTH Subsequently Fort Langley entered a period of dramatic growth in economic activity that confirmed its importance politically and geographically. The establishment of the 49th parallel as the international boundary with the US added to its official lustre.

By examining a wide range of social and political topics, A World Apart recalls how the small southeast corner of British Columbia and the equally small southwest corner of Alberta together formed a society that was unique. When noted Canadian journalist Bruce Hutchinson wrote about his visit to the Ashcroft area of British Columbia in the 1950s, he said the scenery was "for the strong eye only." His opinion was that the harshness of the landscape could please but few observers. With this collection of historic articles and photographs, Pat Foster proudly steps forward as one who delights in that landscape. The Crowsnest Pass and the Elk Valley are part of a geographic region that stretches from Calgary, Alberta to Cranbrook, British Columbia to Spokane, Washington. Yet the economy, politics and social structure of the region have always set it apart from its neighbours in Alberta, the United States and the rest of British Columbia. Consequently, the often unique historical experience of the area is usually neglected by writers of B.C. history
