Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search Table of Contents The first "Olympic" boxing tournament was held in conjunction with the 1904 Games at St. Louis. However, it took place well after athletes from Europe had gone home and, although it was theoretically open to amateurs from any country, only U. S. boxers competed. As a result, there's a great deal of doubt whether the winners should be considered true Olympic champions. Boxing was an official Olympic event in 1908. After skipping 1912, the sport has been on every Olympic program since 1920. Since 1936, the International Amateur Boxing Association has awarded the Val Barker Cup to the Olympic boxer displaying the best style and technique. Bal Barker was the first general-secretary of the association. Competitors take part in a single-elimination tournament with no seeding. Through 1948, the boxers who lost in the semi-final were matched in a fight for the bronze medal. Since 1952, bronze medals have been awarded to both semi-final losers. There are five judges for an Olympic bout. Through 1988, a majority vote of the judges determined the outcome. A computerized scoring system was adopted in 1992. Under that system, a judge is supposed to press a button to record each punch landed by a fighter and, if three of the five judges agree, that fighter is awarded a point. If the fight ends in a tie, the high and low scores are dropped and the scores of the three remaining judges are added.

Extractions: SAVON CRUISES HOME TO GOLDEN TREBLE Cuba's Felix Savon punishes Russia's Sultanahmed Ibzagimov in the 91kg boxing final. Peter Mueller/Reuters AN OPEN wound showed like a tiny mouth beneath Felix Savon's left eye but it scarcely inconvenienced the remarkable Cuban in Sydney yesterday as he used yet another Olympic boxing final as a declaration of the superiority he has been ramming home to the rest of the world's amateur heavyweights since the middle of the 1980s. He is 33 and his power to dictate and intimidate is noticeably shrinking but his points victory over a game Russian rival for the gold medal was comfortable enough to remind him that his real challenger these days is history. Nobody in the boxing hall at Darling Harbour had seriously doubted his capacity to beat Sultanahmed Ibzagimov, a 25-year-old army sports instructor from Rostov-on-Don. The persistent questions were about how he compared with Teofilo Stevenson, the other glorious big man of Cuban boxing, whose record of three golds at successive Olympics Savon equalled with yesterday's quiet triumph. Statistically, the current champion might easily have had the edge by now, since his nation's politically-based boycott of the Seoul Games probably prevented him from starting his sequence in 1988. But in my view such niceties are swamped by the overwhelming case for regarding Stevenson as much the more devastating fighter. The timing of his right hand was so uncannily sweet that it made him simply the most phenomenal puncher I have ever seen, amateur or professional.

Extractions: by Gerry Brown Although boxing was considered too violent for inclusion at the first modern Olympics in , it showed up as a demonstration sport in in St. Louis and then as a medal sport in in London. Boxing was omitted once again, however, in in Stockholm. Since the 1916 Berlin Games were never held due to World War I, boxing didn't permanently join the Olympic fold until in Antwerp. Since then it has included some of the most memorable champions in Olympic history from Cassius Clay and George Foreman to Oscar De La Hoya and Teofilo Stevenson
Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia It's an oft-used headline Boxing's On the Ropes! but hardly anybody remembers it flying into print before even the first punch has been thrown. But the sport is so damaged that there's already talk this could be the last Olympics to feature the same program that produced Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. About all it would take is one more outrageous decision, one more corrupted result, just another Roy Jones fiasco. That one continues to resonate because Jones, now regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, could not sway the hometown judges in Seoul's 1988 Games and lost one of the worst-scored fights in Olympic history. But there have been so many in Olympic boxing over the years that not even a high official from its governing body can promise the sport's continuation. Said AIBA vice president Arthur Tunstall recently: "A new IOC president could look at boxing being a controversial sport and put a proposal to his executive that boxing goes off. That is something we have to wait and see what happens and make sure the Sydney boxing program doesn't have any problems."

Extractions: Audley Harrison ignored a serious hand injury to defeat Kazakhstan's Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov and take Britain's first Olympic boxing gold since 1968. Harrison took charge of the contest in the opening round and increased his advantage in every subesquent round, winning by a 30-16 point decision. But despite the convincing nature of his performance, it was revealed shortly before the bout that the 28-year-old Englishman was suffering from an injured knuckle in his left hand. But he was able to dominate the battle using his right jab and through a debilitating body attack which took its effect on the Kazakhstan fighter during the final round. Harrison started slowly and actually found himself two points down after the first minute of the contest.
Extractions: Boxing was part of the Ancient Olympic Games over 600 years before Jesus was even born! 688 BC to be exact! But after the fall of the Roman Empire boxing disappeared from the record books until the 17th century. In those primitive times boxers didn't wear gloves - leather straps were tied round their hands. But they did train with simple versions of today's punch bags. During Roman times metal studs were added to the leather straps which led to the sport becoming more and more violent until it was banned. Cassius Clay became better known as the great Muhammad Ali Organised amateur boxing came about in the 19th century when the eighth Marquis of Queensberry devised a new set of rules. At the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 boxing was not included in the programme of events. The Athens organisers said it was "ungentlemanly, dangerous and practised by the dregs of society". Boxing made a comeback at the Olympic Games in 1904 and became a staple part of the programme in 1920.
