Extractions: [Getty Images] Christine Arron, above, is the popular default to win the 100 after Marion Jones failed to qualify. The first two names on the list of the fastest 100-meter times in women's track history are no surprise: Florence Griffith-Joyner and Marion Jones, two Olympic legends. Next comes France's Christine Arron, a 30-year-old who comes to Athens hoping to join them in more than just the record books. After a disappointing showing in Sydney, she is a strong contender for medals in the 100 and the 4x100 relay. She failed to reach the 100 final in 2000, then led the French relay to a fourth-place showing in the 4x100, but she regained some momentum at the World Championships in Paris last year. Despite a sixth-place showing in the 100, she rebounded in the relay, outrunning American anchor Torri Edwards to give the French the gold.

Elite Athlete Program (EAP) Home About the Games History The U.S. Transplant Games were first held in Texas in 1982 and attracted only a small number of participants. They were held several times throughout the 1980's, but the event was mainly regional in scope and participation dwindled. In 1990, the National Kidney Foundation, in partnership with Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, took on the task of organizing the Games inIndianapolis, Indiana. Participation grew to 400 athletes and 600 supporters. The success of the Games and the message they engender began to spread to the entire transplant community. The 1994 U.S. Transplant Games was held on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and drew more than 1,000 athletes, who participated as part of 52 teams. Special programs for children and educational symposia for recipients, families and friends were also held. In addition, a special tribute was paid to the over 4,000 families who donate their loved ones organs each year. The 1996 Games were held on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and again were the largest gathering of transplant recipients in one place ever. In addition to the already established events of the Games, additional emphasis was placed on the team aspect of the Gamesteam golf and team bowling were added.
Olympics: Boxing Boxing at the Ancient Olympics did not allow wrestling, Women s track;France s Arron trying to find place in history Winning combination http://www.sptimes.com/2004/08/08/Olympics/Boxing.shtml
Extractions: Click to view related Combat Sports graphic. "One day the ploughshare came away from the plough and his father observed Glaukos hammering it back with his bare fist. Impressed by his son's great strength, the old man decided to take him to the next Olympic Games." Pausanias, Description of Greece , second century A.D. THE EVENT Boxing at the Ancient Olympics did not allow wrestling, holding or "clinching," the delay tactic prevalent among today's heavyweights of clinging to an opponent. It apparently was okay to hit a man when he was down, literally. Virtually any type of blow delivered with the hand was allowed, and vase paintings offer evidence of hooks, uppercuts and rabbit punches. Blows with the side and heel of the hand were common, but gouging with the thumb extended was against the rules. There are surprisingly few references to fatalities during the 1,000 years contests were held, but on such a rare occasion, the dead man was declared the winner and his opponent banished from the stadium.
